Can I use fram full synthetic cvt transmission fluid in my 96 civic Dx i just got the car dont know much about them but my buddy told me not to use it itle mess my tranny up

No. Use automatic transmission fluid. CVT fluid is made for CVT. ATF is made for automatic transmissions. They're completely different.

well it's a 5 speed not automatic he said I should use the honda factory **** but no where around me has it in stock

Just use conventional 5w20 oil. It works just as well.

5w20 is a temporary Band-Aid, you need the proper manual fluid. Dealer will have it.

As weird as it sounds, lots of the guys on DSO run Castrol conventional 5w20 full-time. Even recommended by the trans specialist on there.

Hmm, I know the older cars (eg and earlier) you could. I remember reading in the manual for one of my 6th gens it said you could put 5w20 in as a temporary measure but to put the Honda manual fluid back in as soon as possible. With the way that fluid smells it will have additives (sulfur, etc) that are meant to prolong the gear life that 5w20 doesn't have.
