When I was looking for a leak in our '04 Civic's trunk, I also noticed the poor workmanship on the corners. I know it took me too long of a time to see the corners, but all I can do is hope the inside of it hasn't deteriorated.

When you open the trunk lid, look at the corners. I found how badly the sheet metal was folded and crimped. Both sides had finger-tip sized opening where melting snow/ice and heavy rains could go into. And rust was beginning.

I did a bit of sanding to remover the rust, put a bit of primer on where I could and then made up a bit of JB Weld to cover the holes.
