as long as you get it close, it really doesnt matter, because the mounting location on the trunk arms all depends on the location of the mount under the rear deck
Those of you asking for pics haven't obviously browse this DIY. Page 7 has plenty of pics, but for the lazy ones here they are again!
thanks goes to Stephon314 for these pics.

that ball join has to screw into your trunk arm. if you dont use the tap to thread the hole, its not going to be very secure. When you do it, make sure you use lots of oil. smoke pouring out isnt a good sign

k i'll take your word for it lol..
so, in a nut shell.
1. meausre everything
2. drill 6 holes (4 for brackets with ball stud, 2 for ball joints)
3. tap 6 holes using oil on tap
4. snap shocks on the ball studs
right?

nah the only holes you tap are the two on the trunk arms, one for each side. If you can, put three screws in each bracket on the underside of the rear shelf. use self tappers for those.

ok i tried doing this last night but i only had like an hour before i had to go to class after work...so i only got one side in...and...
i screwed it up! lol
ok, so i see what you're talking about with the tap, it took FOREVER to drill that hole (only cuz my crappy 9.4v drill wasn't charged all the way and i had to drill for a bit, then wait and let it charge, then drill for another minute...the more charging lol..)
anyways, the problem is where i mounted it on the trunk arm. the wouldn't close it still had about 8 or 9 inches to go. should i mount it higher (toward the trunk lid) or lower (toward the rear deck)

dont feel bad about the tap, the first hole i drilled i cracked the tap off in the hole.
I have mine mounted pretty low, close to the rear deck. What worked for me was to get in the trunk and take a ruler, find a spot on the trunk arm and then mark the spot under the deck. then get outa the trunk and make sure it'll work with the trunk open. might take a few tries, but youll get it.

how in the heck do you measure the shocks' closed length?? i got the 40lbs ones and i had a buddy measure while i tried to compress the shock...we couldn't get an acurate measurement.

ok that **** was frustrating lol. i got home at 4:30, made a quick sandwich then got to work. at 7 when dinner was ready i managed to have the bracket and ball stud in the right spots. then i had a 20 min dinner, and by 8 i had the 1st side done!
then...at 8:10 i broke 2 drill bits and said FVCK IT! so tomorrow i have another side to do lol. hopefully this one will go a lot smoother, im sure it will since i already have it marked off where i need to drill.
anyway...thanks for the help!

everything went smoothly! got the other side installed in like 15 minutes yesterday! of course the trunk arm was already tapped so i just needed the bracket
are you guys able to allow the lid to open all the way with the shocks recommended on the first page? the compression is 5.47". Looking at the places you all have been mounting the stud, those points move by way more than 5.47" linearly. I cannot find a point that would allow the lid to open all the way.
Yes, it's an Acura EL
