LED Headlights and DRL

I recently installed some LED headlights on my 2001 Civic. Hi/Lo beam work great but they don't work when the DRL are on.

I know the Civic runs the highbeams in series for the DRL and I'm guessing the LEDs are so low resistance they don't light up properly.

Has anyone come up with a solution for this? Do I need LEDs that support operating at lower voltage or can I install some resistors to run the highbeams in series?

There's usually a separate module that you can buy to make the DRLs work. The bulbs I had for my 05 had the module already wired in (separate high and low bulbs). Or if you have fogs you can wire those to be your DRLs.

You will get flashed by oncomig vehicles as plug and play LED bulbs are not designed for halogen housings. The beam pattern will be scattered and you will have reduced visibility. Unless you have retro fitted a projector housing.
No DRL means no passing inspections at least in my neck of the woods.

Ya the beam pattern ended up being garbage. Switched back to halogens for now. I'm going to do the projector retrofit instead and rewire to run the parking lights or fogs as DRL.

That's the proper way to retrofit LEDs should you have the time, patience and $. Good luck on the project and post photos of your finished headlights.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but are you saying you had High Beam LEDs that worked in DRL mode on your 7th gen Civic, that feeds the high beams in series in DRL Mode (effectively lighting the high beams at quarter intensity)? If so, what brand were they? I can't seem to find ANY LEDs that work properly, and I've been literally checking every compatible 9005 LED on amazon.ca for days on end...

I used a Hamsar unit from Canadian tire back in 2010 when i had to move to Quebec. I did not have fog lights so i did wire my halos

Re: LED Headlights and DRL

anyone remember what the DRL voltage is? Is it half voltage or was it a straight 5?

I've been trying to find [reliable] LED 9005s (I think that's the high beam bulb, at least) with a minimum operating voltage of 5-6V, but only found one from VLEDs with an 8V minimum operating voltage

I think half voltage, the drl unit (in the older cars) was just basically a big resistor pack and a heat sink. It would probably work with 5v though

Re: LED Headlights and DRL

Probably the problem is in the connection of the sidelights. You need to reconnect the sidelights. The most reliable and easiest option is to connect the sidelights without a relay but with a special control unit for running lights. It ensures the switching of the sidelights after the engine is started, ensures safe operation, protects against overloads, and can be installed on cars with any type of lamp, including LED lamps. When I had the same problem, I also changed the lights in the car's interior: https://www.vont.com/product/vont-ca...t-strip-light/. If you use only high-quality LED bulbs, then there should be no problem! There are a lot of options! You need to try all ways!
