Need ideas to hand wash my car without a car wash or water hose.

Hi all,

I really need to hand wash my car but don't know how to do this in my circumstances which I'll explain. I hope that someone might have some ideas.

The situation is that hand washing is not allowed in the local car washes where I live and I won't use the brushes that are supplied for fear of scratching my paint so my only other option is to hand wash it somewhere else.

Note that I won't pay someone else for reasons of the cost and fear of my paint being scratched.

And I don't know anyone who has a home with a hose which is probably prohibited anyway here in CA because of our recent drought.

I was not able to wash my car for weeks to about a month or so in which time grime built up. Previously, I washed my car every week or two.

I didn't use soap but only water. Then I dried the car with a soft drying towel. Very little dirt actually showed up on the towel. This method worked really well because of a wax detail job done several months ago and washing (rinsing) my car often. The dirt came off really easily just by rinsing.

I do plan to take my car back for another wax detail job when I have the money in my budget. Til then, I need to hand wash my car to get it back to where rinsing it alone may still work.

The only idea that I could think of is to hand wash my car in my apt parking lot, possibly doing a section at a time over several different days, with a bucket or two. I can fill buckets from my apt. The apt management may not like my washing my entire car in their parking lot so doing this in stages might be best.

Or is there better way? Is this even possible but not cost prohibitive?

Two three gallon buckets and a couple hand towels. Helps to be within walking distance of a water source. If not, get two 5 gallon mud buckets with lids. Never be a slave to a car.

This sounds doable. Thanks for the tip about the buckets.

Here is a thread on a 4runner forum I am on. He uses some stuff called no rinse. Sounds like what you are looking for.

You can sometimes get really cheap buckets at a 99 cent or dollar store, fyi.
