alternate way to wire speakers to an amp

i was helping my friend install his ice in an eclipse. he had a four channel amp and wanted to hook them up to his speakers. the speakers were allready installed so i thought it would be easier to tap into the wiring harness behind the headunit then pulling off the door panels and running it through the boot of the door. well i hooked everything up and no sound from the front. i hooked it up by cutting the wiring harness between the new hu's half and the metra half of the harness and hooked the new cable from the amp into the metra half. was that the right way to do it?
