2003 civic ex, starts runs for 30 sec. Then dies. [solved]

Having an issue with a 03 ex. It will start and run normally for 30 sec maybe a min. Initially, then die. I have checked timing, it is spot on, no check engine light. If try to start again, it will only run for a couple of seconds maybe and die again. Anyone ever had something similar happen?

Need to see if you're missing fuel or spark when it's trying to start. Any parts replaced recently?

So I found I had a code for ELD, voltage too high. (No check engine light though). Got car to run long enough to check charging voltage, and was 16.47 at battery and 17v T alternator. So I figured it was a bad regulator in alternator and got a new one. Installed new alternator and it is doing the same damn thing...wtf?? What controls the alternator output voltage in this system????

Did you buy an aftermarket alternator?
need to be oem, junkyard if you don't want to buy new

That would suggest your OEM alternator isn't working properly. Replace it with another OEM alternator.

And so, why? I have used reman alternators before with no issues. What makes a 2003 honda civic ex so special? Are they not just refurbished OEM alternators?? I mean, you sound like a honda parts rep...

Honda's are notoriously picky with aftermarket electronics. Given some quick reading you can do here, the most common electronic failure on this forum concerns aftermarket components.

I have no affiliation with Honda besides being a moderator on this forum. I'm a university student.

previous cases of aftermarket alternators not working for these cars, really, over the decades.

So I replaced the alternator again, and this one is working fine. However, still doing original issue..will start n run for about a min first time, then just start and die.

So back to checking if it's losing spark when it dies

Maybe it's losing crank or cam signal then, got a scanner that does live data?
