Denso ignition coils any good?
Re: Denso ignition coils any good?
The engine overheated (blew the engine) and melted the of the ignition coil. Maybe more than one.
I bought a used engine to put in the civic and the coil being melted was found while taking parts off the old engine to swap onto the used engine.
I'm not doing the engine swap. It's more than I can handle at this point. A very good mechanic and friend who has his own shop is doing the work.
Thanks for the heads up about Amazon
Unfortunately another issue turned up about the used engine I bought.
I thought I bought a VTEC but my mechanic friend found out it doesn't have the oil solenoid for the VTEC.
Also something about the solenoid holds the bracket that attaches to____?
He didn't know if putting in this engine would cause a check engine light to come on. I assume that would be due to an emissions issue.
Also if it was plugged in during inspection it might fail the inspection.
I'm going to start a thread about this or search the forum to see what I can find.

Re: Denso ignition coils any good?
Returned the engine and picked up the correct on for my EX (D17A2) which is what I thought I bought originally.
I'm going to buy a Timing belt and a Water pump for it and have them put on before the engine gets installed
My mechanic said I should get an idler pulley too but from everything I've read after searching the forum it seems the D17A2 doesn't have an idler pulley.
Does anyone have any idea what part he might be talking about?

Re: Denso ignition coils any good?
Thanks.
I did a search on Majestic Auto (www.hondaautomotiveparts.com) and they don't seem to have a part called a "harmonic balancer".
Could it have another name?

The crank pulley, but I've never heard of it being called a tensioner. Just let your mechanic do his thing.
Re: Denso ignition coils any good?
I’ve searched for a Timing Belt at a couple of Honda dealers including Majestic Honda. They say they are on back order and have no idea when one will become available. It could take months.
Considering a new Timing Belt was put on the old engine last November, is there any way it would still be good considering how hot the engine got when it overheated? It was so hot behind the timing belt the plastic shield that’s up against the head melted. See pic below

It's really up to you to decide. Best case it works fine for 90k miles, worst case it snaps in 5k.
You can get a timing belt kit (belt, tensioner, water pump) on RockAuto for much cheaper than OEM. I've used the Gates brand a few times (<$100) but never put many miles on it before selling. Aisin is also a good brand (~$120).

Thanks. I appreciate seeing there are decent alternatives to OEM parts, as I've read on the forum a few times to only use OEM.
Not sure why using aftermarket hasn't come up much but it's breath of fresh air (for both availability as well as my wallet) to see there are decent aftermarket options.

Re: Denso ignition coils any good?
well, the tensioner is the worrisome part of the aftermarket timing belt kits, some failed...
the belts, don't remember many cases. As for the overheating impact to the belt, I would think not even the belt itself would know... Much less us. All we can tell is that rubber does not like heat that much, can survive the normal temps. How much above that, no idea

Re: Denso ignition coils any good?
The used engine I bought has 130k on it.
One would hope the timing belt was changed at 100k.
Regardless we’re going to replace it anyway.
But my question is does the tensioner need to be replaced when doing a timing belt?
if so perhaps the one in the used engine is good.

Re: Denso ignition coils any good?
Update:
The tensioner was replaced (last November) when the head was put on the engine that just blew.
I found the receipt from Majestic Auto and it’s there so it is an OEM Tensioner.
Hoping it can be used/ swapped over the the engine I just bought.

Re: Denso ignition coils any good?
Is there any reason to believe that OEM Tensioner bought and installed last November would be compromised by the blown engine due to its overheating that would render that Tendioner as unusable due to the extreme heat?
