Buying a 5th gen EX trim.
Buying a 5th gen EX trim.
So I've been thinking about buying a 5th gen Civic sedan, should I try to wait out an EX trim for the improved D16 engine, or is it not even worth my time to wait for one. Being new to the market I'm unsure about availability between the trims so I was looking for some general insight into which trims are most available, I don't really want a DX trim but if that is really the only thing available I will go for it and ignore waiting on LX or EX trims. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Due to the modded engine I don't think it will pass safety inspection in NC. It's age doesn't require emissions testing.
Price is $3,500 firm. 95' EX Coupes are going up in value as they are getting harder to find. Mine is in very good condition and no mechanical issues.

I live in NC also in the Piedmont triad area. My son and I are driving the car from Florida to NC in late June. I will garage the car here and he is moving from FL to NYC.

Unless, you are going to use it as a track car only you probably can't register it in NC. Florida doesn't have inspections so the car sat at my mom's house unused for over a year until my son moved from California to Florida. I gifted the car to him. Now, he's moving out of Florida and it won't pass NY state inspection either.

I wouldn't sell you a car that won't pass state (NC) inspection if you intend it to be a daily driver. My wife and I moved to NC about 18 months ago and prior to moving here I called a few shops here to find out if my car can pass, I told them it has a swapped engine and they all said it won't pass as it has to be the same engine code as what came out of the factory (1.5L).

-edit I'm doing some googling and it seems like it just has to meet emissions, be the same brand, and be the same year or newer engine, I know you called some shops but I'm unsure about what to trust.
-edit 2 (from the EPA) "It should be noted that while EPA's policy allows engine switches as long as the resulting vehicle matches exactly to any certified configuration of the same or newer model year as the chassis"
Later civics have B20's in them, wouldn't this then make it legal.

How do they decide what engine is in it, isn't the b series pretty similar to d series in terms of looks, do they come look at it personally or is it more of a you get caught and the car is impounded, because this would be my daily.

No civics ever came with B20's. B20's came in CR-V's, which I suspect are worse for emissions that civics.

Ah, where they in any subdivisions of the civic, del sol, cr-x, prelude etc, also, would a couple teenagers at Jiffy Lube really see that it wouldn't pass, I mean, this is a deal I'm not really sure I want to pass up, just because I haven't found anything relatively close to even driveable yet, and the luck with you being in the Piedmont region, I'm just trying to find any solution.

B20's came only in the CR-V and first gen prelude (which would fail anyway because it's an OBD0 engine). If the car was able to pass, it doesn't sound like he'd be selling it.

I can't consciously sell you a car that you won't be able to register.

-edit Also I appreciate the honesty, you could have dumped it on me and left me screwed.
