Gabriel Ultra front struts and sway bar link
Gabriel Ultra front struts and sway bar link
Hi,
I change my whole suspension parts a year ago exactly, struts were moonroe, they are badly shot bad quality compare to stock ones that lasted over 120k miles and didn't gave the problems these are giving. I just purchased Gabriel ultra from rockauto.c probably another garbage but I need it. Do I need to change any other parts again beside struts? Sway bar link or else together? I need new tires and alignment after. Ty so much

Re: Gabriel Ultra front struts and sway bar link
Exactly just replacing the struts noticed a tie rod completely loose on the passenger side and even the ball joint boot is cracked. I replaced all that a year ago and they didn't last it seems. Not as good as the ones that originally came with car. My front tires were like half way so wasted, I believe because of the strut I hope. I had been ordering parts from rockauto.com is there a better quality parts place you could recommend. Nothing seems to last too much
Re: Gabriel Ultra front struts and sway bar link
The one thing I like about RockAuto is it shows different quality parts. Did you buy the real cheap "Economy" replacements? Moog is a good brand, I've used them for ball joints, tie rod ends, and sway bar links without any issue.
Re: Gabriel Ultra front struts and sway bar link
Finished installing struts and now one wheel is bent inward and the steering feels loose and turning side ways byitself. I did put too much torque into the tie rod, since it was bad I thought putting some pressure was going to tighten a little more. Could that be the problem? And I have another concern about the strut mount and bearings, when I tightened the center nut, the bearings felt hard to rotate so I loosen it up slightly. Is this the way it's supposed to go? I didn't know the center nut rotated with the strut? What about the friction it does?

Any time you separate the tie rod from the strut, you should be getting an alignment
as far as mounting nuts, torque to spec, call it a day

Re: Gabriel Ultra front struts and sway bar link
Then does it mean struts are not made equally even? The thing is way off toward inside like an inch. I got appointment may 6 for new tires and I wanted to make sure everything was rdy to go after to alignment . What a mess I'm in
Re: Gabriel Ultra front struts and sway bar link
Center nut on the strut should be seated all the way down and tight (about 32-36 lb/ft if I had to guess). The bearing should rotate pretty easily and should move nice and smooth.
Did you mark the location of your old tie rods when you removed them? If the new ones are far off then it could make one wheel have more toe then the other.

Re: Gabriel Ultra front struts and sway bar link
So you just popped them out of the strut and then reinstalled after replacing? Didn't replace the tie rod ends at all.
It's possible the old struts were bent but an alignment fixed it. It's also possible the new one is bent, an alignment should fix it though. For the time being you can adjust the tie rods yourself to get it at least somewhere close. Definitely need an alignment before new tires.

Re: Gabriel Ultra front struts and sway bar link
Appreciate very much you people time, and knowledge given to help on this. Thanks so much.
i was able to adjust and appeared quite simple not complicated as I was worrying about.
Passenger side tie rod is in terrible condition. Trying to order now the few parts around there.
Moog or beckarnley. Also wondering about PROFORGED brand proclaimed as a premium part, wonder if is as good or better cause prices are quite low

Re: Gabriel Ultra front struts and sway bar link
I have no experience with PROFORGED but based on price being slightly higher than MOOG and the fact Amazon says it comes with a 1,000,000 mile warranty I'd say they're quality parts.
Definitely get a professional alignment after replacing tie rods and before new tires (or very soon after).
