manual trans pops out of 5th

ok, so my trans on my 03 ex coupe was popping out of 5th while driving. it got so bad, it wouldnt stay in 5th at all. i could feel the gears engage, i was able get forward motion, but as soon as i took my hand off the shifter, it would pop out of gear, with a visceral buck. i replaced the trans with a rebuilt one, and it worked fine for a month, and on my way home from work today, the new trans started doing it too. now, admittedly, i havent had the chance to check to fluid, but i just filled it with OEM fluid a month ago, and ive only driven about 1000 miles on it. i just dont understand, and its quite frustrating.

please help.

Re: manual trans pops out of 5th

Sounds similar to when I needed a new clutch.

Rebuilt trans come with a new clutch?

Re: manual trans pops out of 5th

Sounds like one of your shifter cables got a bind in it or when your reinstalled them maybe they weren’t aligned correctly, maybe cable got routed wrongly around the rear mount, maybe shifter ball is split

If the cable almost puts the transmission all the way into 5th, but just doesn’t push it far enough for the indent ball to lock it you could expect it to pop out.

Re: manual trans pops out of 5th

yea my first step would be to remove the resonator, engine off, have someone put it into 5th and then yank on the linkage and see if I could move it further at the transmission.

Re: manual trans pops out of 5th

ok, so i got a chance to check the fluid level today. it was full, fluid was the right color (i mean its less than 1000 miles old, so im not surprised), and no leaks on the tranny. any help would be appreciated. im thinking im gonna have to go ahead and find the money to take it somewhere to get looked at, because im stumped.

Re: manual trans pops out of 5th

Inspect cables and linkages as mentioned above

Shift lever....in 5th gear is the lever travel (or throw distance) the same as 1st and 3rd? If obstruction were blocking the lever from reaching full travel you'd surely feel something unusual in the movement

ok im thinking this could be a potential culprit. one day before i replaced the tranny, it was really hard to shift into any gear. i got home and greased the shifter and everything, and it seemed to work fine after that. some time later was when i started getting the problem with 5th, and rplaced the tranny, thinking it was a trans problem. but now that the new trans is doing the same thing, im thinking there is another problem that was affecting the shifts.

its only in 5th though, how strange.

Re: manual trans pops out of 5th

Maybe new-to-you used trans came with its own set of problems?

Still got your original to rebuild?
