newbie 2004 Civic 2 door 5 speed
Hi,
I am new here. Not new to Honda's bought our first one in 1979 or 80. Have loved them through the years.
Right now I have a 2004 Honda civic 5 speed manual transmission. I had the alternator replaced about 3 months ago. Coming home tonight the battery light came on and I started losing power and the lights were dimming pretty bad. Pulled to the side of the road and coasted a bit all of the instruments went flat. I came to a full stop, I had no power. The lights were dim but the motor was still running. I revved it a couple of times and all the instruments and power came back on. The battery light went off, but the check engine light came on. I was only a couple of miles from home at this point, so I drove home. Any ideas what could be going on? Could my alternator that I just had replaced be dying again, already?? Thanks for any and all help!
Cheers!!

If you just replaced it was it new or a rebuild, as well how long ago, a month, a year?
I'd say test the alternator real quick by connecting a multimeter.
If you test the voltage across the battery when the car is off you should see 10-12 volts. then start the car. The voltage should rise by two or so volts from the initial measurement.
If the voltage drops when you start the car then you know the alternator is either dead, or, has a bad connection/loose belt.
Good luck.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
