AC idling issues
AC idling issues
Well I have had a bunch of recent issues with my 1992 Civic LX, but the only one really bugging me is the idle. Shouldn't the engine idle up when the AC is turned on? My older (1988) civic used too. What sensor or valve is in charge of this operation?

Re: AC idling issues
The idle doesn't necessarily have to increase, it depends on programming.
It SHOULD stay at a consistent RPM as the compressor engages and disengages. It shouldn't drop a bunch when the compressor kicks on.
The 88 may have used vacuum diaphragms for idle-up RPM control that were independently adjustable.
The 92 is not the same, it should use an IAC to control idle speed, as determined by the computer.

Re: AC idling issues
SWAG at what car you have, for a catalog pic:

Box #17 is the IAC, bolted to the back of the intake manifold with 2 bolts. Just remove the bolts and lean the IAC back for access (I don't disconnect the hoses).
#19 is called a filter.
This probably has the filter screen clogged with carbon and soot buildup, clean (scrape) the buildup off of that screen out see if that helps.
Then you might want to clean out the throttle body.
