Noises and Leaks...Please HELP!
Noises and Leaks...Please HELP!
*** With an additional region specific question: https://www.civicforums.com/forums/3...ml#post4644011. ***
Hello everyone, I recently bought my first car, a 2008 Honda Civic LX Sedan. I have the following two inspection reports.
[Links to reports have been removed.]
NOISES:
[p1] When the brake pedal is pressed all the way down, the car makes a single loud banging sound before coming to a complete stop. The sound comes possibly from the rear right side.
[p2] When someone tries to get in the car and sit on the rear right side of the back-seat, the car makes creaking sounds.
[p3] While turning the steering wheel with the brake pedal pressed all the way down, the car makes creaking sounds.
LEAKS found by MIDAS:
[p4] "Slight leak from engine oil pan": MIDAS marked it as "may require future attention" and told me, I should watch for it to get worse and then take it for repair.
[p5] "Rear shocks are leaking slightly": MIDAS marked it as "may require future attention" too and told me, I should have them changed at 80,000 KM.
My questions:
[q1] What might be causing these noises and what would be a reasonable price for fixing it?
[q2] How will I know if the leak from engine oil pan is getting worse? Should I watch for heavier leaks on the floor under the car? Should I watch for anything else?
[q3] Should I get all the leaks fixed right away? How much they may cost?
Thanks very much for reading and for your valuable suggestions!

Re: 2008 Honda Civic LX Sedan: Noise and Leaks
Too long, didn't read.
You bought a USED car.
The link I clicked on appears to contain a visual report with a detailed brake check. And a free battery check. They sell lots of brakes.....Hmm, I wonder why they concentrate on a detailed brake report...Hmmmm....
You need to find a competent mechanic you can trust. Dealer or indy, someone you can trust.
Chain stores normally aren't the ones for this.
Chain stores: If they don't do it then you don't need it.
At least the chain store admitted that a brake job wouldn't solve the problem and didn't make you buy a brake job to find that out ($$$$), so kudos to them for that.
There are a couple of areas that very commonly leak oil on that engine, and the oil pan "gasket" is not one of them.
Could they have meant the drain plug or something?
Take it to someone else you can trust.

If the only tool in your box is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Re: 2008 Honda Civic LX Sedan: Noise and Leaks
Oh my a prepurchase inspection has gone up to 100 dollars after tax? that's insane. Considering they don't check half the stuff unless your standing right beside them they are making a boat load of money... Hence why I hate Midas. Nothing seems out of the ordinary there though. They usually recommend brakes or shocks because those are their big hitters for profit. Easy jobs they can knock off in an hour and charge more for labor.

Re: Noises and Leaks...Please HELP!
Thanks for your suggestions, everyone!
UPDATE on NOISES:
Noises were caused by dust deposits in the rear brakes. Dusts were cleaned and some lubricants were put on where applicable by a trusted technician, who only charged me $40 for the job.
UPDATE on LEAKS:
According to this technician, upper oil pan is showing minor seepage but will not require any immediate fix. He didn't find the rear shocks leaking; they just collected some dark dusts.

Thanks very much for your suggestions, ezone!
That's because I emphasized on the brake noise and requested them to find the reason during their inspection if they can.
They gave me a quote of $460 to replace the brake (shoe, durm, and combi-kit), which they thought may eliminate the noise because the noise was coming from the brake. Later, my trusted technician eliminated the noise for $40.
I am sorry, ezone! I am not yet knowledgeable enough to answer this question of yours. The technician who eliminated the brake noise for me said that the upper old pan is showing minor seepage and will not require any immediate fix.
