screaching sound

hello i have a 2004 civic lx and there is a loud screaching sound from the engine at random times. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the pulleys because if i accelerate then it changes the sound and eventually it stops. I replaced the belts over the summer so they are new. What could be the problem?
Thanks!

Re: screaching sound

i have to ask this just to make sure, though if you did the belts you're probabley not this new, lol.

could it be your brakes? those deffinitally make a screeching sound that goes away when they're not in us (ei: accelerating), it's a safety feature to let you knew when you need new ones.

Re: screaching sound

Does it happen typically when the car is still cold? If so, belts are one of the few things that actually contract when they warm up.. Since these cars have manual adjustments, when you originally did the belts they could have stretched and need to be readjusted. If none of these fit you may have to get someone to press on the gas while you look around and try to pinpoint the noise.

yes I can try and get a video of it and yes it is high pitched.
It does usually happen when its cold, so should I try to tighten the belts?

Re: screaching sound

Yeap, first check the deflection. I normally just find the middle point of the longest section between the pulleys and try twisting them there. If they twist/turn more than 90 degrees give or take they need tightened. Make sure ya check both the serpentine and the individual power steering belt.
