engine snoring noise

Hello All---'03 Civic coupe has weird noise heard only on decelerating-Take your foot off the gas, any speed, sounds like a snoring sound. It happens when you are using engine compression to slow down.

I would have thought it an exhaust system leak but, only on decel? It is best heard from inside the car.

Engine runs well, good power, no DTC codes.

I pulled all the intake related stuff off--nothing seemed wrong. Cold starts are fine--occasionally some momentary intake wheeze on starting.

I put it up on stands and followed the exhaust while running--no holes or noise.

Thanks for any help you can give

David

Re: engine snoring noise

Will it make the noise when you back up?

Any recent work done? (timing belt, bodyshop, etc.)

Manual or automatic trans?

Re: engine snoring noise

Thanks Ezone--

Standard trans, no recent significant work. I had my son try it last night and he said it makes the sound when you accel in reverse but not when decel--????

The front motor mount does have a split but the engine doesn't roll excessively.

It all started the day after my sons replaced the battery--and lost a screwdriver in the engine compartment. Later, I pulled all the intake components out so I could see well--and concluded the screwdriver was no longer present, so probably just coincidence.

Thanks in advance, DLS

Look at the evidence you posted.
Logic says it's probably not coincidence.
You just haven't found the screwdriver yet.

Figure out how to get it to make the noise while sitting still (power brake/sidestep it?)
Look for the noise while it is happening.

If a timing belt had just been done, I would think it was the small plate under the drivers side engine mount had been spun into the wrong position.

Thanks for the ideas--

I don't think there is much liklihood that the screwdriver is still lurking somewhere.

Do Vtech engines have any vacuum controlled gates/valves between intake and exhaust? (besides EGR valve--maybe something like Ford intake manifold runner control valve?)

You'd be amazed at some of the tools I have found under the hoods over the years. How about a working air ratchet someone left behind, and plenty of hand tools.

No, VTEC type stuff is all done with electrically controlled hydraulics using engine oil pressure. Civic doesn't have IMRC (AFAIK).

Re: engine snoring noise

Problem solved--Yes, sports fans, it was the screwdriver--found after putting it up on the lift--had to remove the mount to get to it. Noise was caused when the engine rocked, it pushed the screwdriver agains the body--and transmitted the engine vibration to the car body like a drumhead.

Crazy.

Funny, today I left a $30 panel tool in a Marshal's vehicle. I hate paying for tools again, grrr!
