Fuel gauge issue
Fuel gauge issue
Before anyone says search, I already did and will reference the info I found while discussing my issue.
Recently I filled up and was able to put more fuel in than I usually can when the light comes on. This led me to believe there was a problem, which was confirmed when the next time I filled up and reset my trip meter, found that the tank gauge only showed half full, but the tank was empty based on the number of kilometers I had driven.
I know other people have mentioned the same issue.
I have already tested the gauge by following the steps to see if all the needles are working correctly and not giving an error message.
So I am pretty sure the issue is the fuel sending unit, although I cannot find any records of anybody replacing it on their own or any DIY for it.
I am perfectly comfortable jumping in to it myself, but I cannot find the specific part on a parts diagram both from majestic Honda and HondaPartsNow.com
Anyone can offer some wisdom as to the correct part I am looking for?

Re: Fuel gauge issue
#1 is the sender. Pull the rear seat out and its easy to get to. My first order or business would be to pull it out and check the sender itself for broken wires etc and to check it with a dvom. That puppy isn't cheap. If you have never pulled the rear seat out there is one bolt holding it in. It is by the female part of the drivers side rear belt. I think it was 8mm... First time I pulled it out it went in the trash, you don't need it. It is there for assembly line purposes I bet. Once its out just pull the front edge of the seat up from the two clips on the front and pull it out. Just pull it up, no releases or nothing.

I thought there was the Fuel sender unit that sent the message to the gauge on the gas level in the tank?
Tonight I tried to fill up with the tank empty, but the gauge showing half full. And I can't put more than half a tank of gas in it.

Re: Fuel gauge issue
fuel pump is electronic so makes sense it would all be built in as one unit. when i had mine done under warranty, i noticed a pretty high base price like $400+ for the part and labor. took them a few hrs to install (and spilling gas under the rear seat) and im guessing the fuel pump was half the total cost so they prolly replaced the whole thing.
Re: Fuel gauge issue
There is a fuel level sensor, but you can't get it seperate that I'm aware of. I believe you have to get the complete sender assembly. That is why I say pull it out and make sure you can't fix it. If you can get to the fuel sensor part make sure there is no broken wires of course, make sure the contact is making good contact throughout the float's travel, and clean it off with some electric cleaner. Test it with a dvom to make sure its working, or you can hook it back up and see if it works. Try to hook the wires to the gauge up out ot the tank so you can move it through it's range. BUT, if you hook the whole thing up be sure to try and disconnect the fuel pump, because #1 you don't want to run it out of the fuel, and #2 you will have fuel spray all over your passenger compartment if you don't.
Re: Fuel gauge issue
IMO your barking at the wrong end of the car. Instrument cluster issues are very common on these cars. Enough so that the ..one.. time mine showed a small error: 1/2 when it was full. The dealer simply swapped in a fresh Gauge cluster... under warranty :-) NO issues ever since.

I would be more likely to believe the fuel tank is doing something wonky not allowing me to pump the gas. I can tear the gauge out of the car completely and I would probably still be able to put gas in the tank
