Transmission Whine

I've been doing a transmission drain and fill over the last couple of weeks (using Valvoline Maxlife and easing my tranny into the new fluid slowly) and after the last drain and fill I've noticed a high pitched whine that matches the RPMs upon a cold start. After the car gets up to operating temp it goes away. I thought I might not have put enough fluid back in........but according to the stick its fine. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Transmission Whine

I guess my first and only question would be why aren't you using Honda ATF?

The whine could be the torque converter in the transmission. But no telling at this point.

Re: Transmission Whine

Why? Because a moderator on this site suggested using Maxlife for a defective secondary clutch carrier......but thanks for your help. Any non-trolls have any ideas?

Re: Transmission Whine

mine started whining early this summer, around march. i switched to maxlife in july hoping the whine would go away, but it has not. a few shops i called told me usually the whine is caused by the oil pump being starved of fluid (due to a badly clogged internal filter, which happens quite often with these autos). he did mention that using a lower viscosity fluid (like maxlife) will help prolong the life of the trans by circulating faster on cold starts. so far, the maxlife has completely fixed the slipping when cold. i had that slip using honda z1 for over 50k miles and never thought that the fluid can be the cause. its really amazing what a difference maxlife made after only a few months of use. but anyway to answer the question, maxlife would not cause the whining, or at least not in my case.
