04 Civic Brake Pedal Noise
04 Civic Brake Pedal Noise
Good day all,
I have a 2004 Civic with 76000 miles and drives like a charm. Only draw back here is that I get a squeaking/squealing noise each time I lift my foot off the brake pedal.
Searched the existing threads and did not see anything close to my issue.
Thanks in advance.

Re: 04 Civic Brake Pedal Noise
Try pulling and release the hand brake a couple of time and see if the noise is still present.
The shoes rub against the backing plate and make the noise. Very common.

Re: 04 Civic Brake Pedal Noise
could also try the 'reverse-and-brake' technique a few times. sometimes the self adjuster gets stuck and that helps free it up. find an empty lot and drive in reverse 10-15mph, then hit the brakes moderately. repeat a few times and see what happens.
Re: 04 Civic Brake Pedal Noise
no luck with the e-brake method. used it for the last two days and sound still there. will give the reverse and brake method a try now. i am open to any suggestions to solve this.
thx again!

Re: 04 Civic Brake Pedal Noise
I meant to use it as a diagnostic method, not a cure. With the car off and parked, slightly pull and release the p brake a few times and see it the chirp/squeek occurs when releasing the brake.

Re: 04 Civic Brake Pedal Noise
If the noise occurs during test... it is likely a pretty easy fix. And not a safety issue. It happened on my 05.

If the shop is honest they should not charge that much to solve this, and they can do an inspection while at it.

No problem, Take the info found here with you and it will cut out diagnostic time.
It really is a simple fix, assuming the drums will come off.

Re: 04 Civic Brake Pedal Noise
is this just a 1 second quick mouse squeak type of noise? i used to have that before too. everytime i would lower the ebrake (or the regular brake) it would squeak. if you hold the ebrake button and move it up and down repeatedly from top to bottom, does it keep squeaking? if so you just have to lube the ebrake cable in the drums. i kinda liked the noise tho lol
Re: 04 Civic Brake Pedal Noise
Mine does the same. lubricate the rear barkes and the noise will go away.. Damn Steve it drives me crazy but I haven't had time to remove the drums.

Re: 04 Civic Brake Pedal Noise
It is easy if the drums will come off. Mine came off by hand and the shoes can stay in place you only need to lube the points where the ] portion of the shoes contact the backing plate.
Just a tiny bit of wheel grease at each one, noise gone.

Re: 04 Civic Brake Pedal Noise
M8 bolts are the right ones, spray some white lithium grease where the E brake cable enters the drum assembly as well ... Try to shoot it as far up the cable as possible. Make sure you don't accidentally pop the cylinder out or one of the springs or you will be in a world of hurt, especially if you've never changed drum brakes before.. mwahahaha
