Timing Jumped again. Why??
Timing Jumped again. Why??
--02 Civic LX, 1.7 5 Speed, 167k miles. (friends car, I did the work)
Replaced head gasket aprox. 1700 miles ago. At that time also replaced timing belt, tensioner, and water pump. Car ran great for about 1650 miles. Then stumbled and threw P1129.
Timing belt was off, it had jumped. I had followed the procedure in the Haynes book to a T.
Replaced belt with belt from dealer, replaced spring. cleaned all pulleys throughouly. Left tensioner. I used a wire for a grenade pin. Pulley had about the same rotational resistance as the old one I took of when i did the head gasket, so I assumed it was still good.
Followed procedure from this forum. (https://www.civicforums.com/forums/115-engine/302900-timing-belt-diy-2-a.html) Torqued to 33 ft-lbs afterwards.. ran car in driveway for a while without upper cover on and watched belt. The belt would flutter a bit after letting off when revving to high rpms, but not like it was going to jump. I drove the car for about 30 miles, took it to red line, drove normal. Stopped at a few stores, drove it to work, car ran fine. She drives it home. Takes it to work one more day. The following day, the timing jumps again.
Why???
(I haven't torn back into it yet)

Re: Timing Jumped again. Why??
Was the tensioner and spring a aftermarket? and did you torque the tensioner mounting bolt? and was the bolt new the first time? If it was my I would take apart and put a new honda tensioner and a new bolt. Most of the aftermarket tensioners are thicker then the Honda brand and the bolt doest go in as far. If the tensioner bolt is lose at all it will cause you some issues. On my I had to helicoil for the tensioner bolt and it sucked bad
