1982 Civic 4-dr 5MT EMI Power Plant

Just wanted to say Ive been lurking for about a week now, but this place looked pretty awesome, and I had need of asking my own questions.

So I bought a 1982 4-dr 5 speed manual for $380, which I thought was a good price despite the cars problems. I was not super familiar with the car, but knew that this particular year had ridiculous gas mileage and the price was right.

With that said, Id like to get the knitty gritty. Its seems the tachometer is broken, and Iive read on these years its cable driven, as opposed to electronic. Any fixes?

Also the gas gauge likes to jump up and down, depending on how fast Im going it appears. Im talking from empty to quarter or half tank. Im wondering if my whole gauge cluster needs to be replaced, and if so, where could I get one, besides my local Pull'your'part?

Sometimes when Im at a stop, the idle will get somewhat high, but Ill start to drive again and it will be fine. In fact, it will often go away. Still, any ideas why the idle would sometimes jump at a stop while in neutral?

There seems to be a rattling coming the front right of the car, though for all I know in the driver seat, its coming frm the muffler. It gets especially loud when I take a turn with any amount of speed.

And in general, what should I look out for on a this old of a Civic?

Any help is seriously appreciated. Thanks guys.

For the cable your best chance is new: http://www.hondapartscheap.com/south...t=0&quantity=0

Chances are the gas gauge problem is the circuit board, #6: http://www.hondapartscheap.com/south...t=0&quantity=0 The solder points break. Some people try to solder them back but, the easiest thing to do is get new.

If you wanna take a chance and go used try here: http://www.picknpull.com/default.aspx (absolute cheapest around). or here: http://www.car-part.com/ (nationwide salvage listings)

High idle usually indicates a vacuum leak.

Keep us posted.

For the cable you can try to find a speedometer shop and take the old cable and sheath into them and have them run a new cable through it, or they may be able to custom make one. Is it a rattle or a clicking from the front? If clicking since it gets worse when you turn that says cv joint is junk, so replace the driveshaft on that side, which is inexpensive and relatively easy to do. The idle jumping as said before is probably a vacuum leak somewhere just start replacing hoses as im sure they need it anyway. The gas gauge issue just follow what he said as well.

You guys are great. So it sounds as though the fuel gauge is a hose leak. But I think there is also a problem with the board because the middle section of lights, like the battery and oil lights, arent working.

I am a semi-skilled solderer, do you think its worth taking apart and checking it out myself?

Ok guys, I have another question.

I took out the fuel filter but I forgot to look at its orientation. The line is on the driver side of the gas tank to the rear. Which way should I face it? I imagine towards the engine, but I dont where the fuel pump is in relation.

I'm having a horendous time getting parts for my 1982 Civic sedan.
Thankyou very much LAZLONG for the links. Most of the OEM parts are discontinued now. The junkyard networks are the only option. And surprisingly, very few junkyards even have 1982 civics any more.

I don't understand... where did all the 1982's go?

They made them into new cars, soda cans, etc via the crusher. Sorry bro.

Don't forget eBay. Also try http://www.hondapartscheap.com/south...t=0&quantity=0 for a nationwide search of craigslist.

Might be better off just buying a whole parts car, there are several on the link listed above.

BTW: Very good use of the search feature. +1
