Replacement axle too short ?
Replacement axle too short ?
I broke the Tripod Joint on the Inner CV joint on my drivers side axle shaft the other day and looked up some parts sites for a replacement.
I went to O'reilly auto parts with my broken axle, but when I laid the 2 axles next to each other the replacement was shorter by about 4 cm (+/- 1 cm).
It baffled me and the sales chick.
Why would they be different?
Here's a link to o'reillys site, part number 60-4190
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/se...001&vi=1373251
Anyways, where can I get a proper driver's side axle for my 2k1 LX 4dr MT
Thanks

Re: Replacement axle too short ?
While at the store comparing the 2 axles I did try and extend the replacement one to try and make it the same length, but the difference was too significant.
If the exact length doesn't really matter than I guess this is a newbie thread.

Re: Replacement axle too short ?
a broken CV will extend more if the bearings came out. did you try to rotate the CV in the shafts to see if they compress more instead of trying to extend the new ones?
The suspension move and changes the distance to the transmission slightly, so to avoid the shaft popping out from the transmission casing, the axles are made to slide (at some extent, naturally).
I did not check if the part number is the right one, though. maybe someone else will butt in.

Re: Replacement axle too short ?
Went to advanced auto parts today to pick up another CV shaft.
CV2134

It's also too short, the distance between the 2 boots is shorter than my old axle. So even if I compressed the old one it is longer.

Re: Replacement axle too short ?
Have you tried Napa? That's where I got both my axles. Fit with no issues. I mean, like they said, it's gonna slide some, but if the difference is insane, then I'd try and check somewhere else.
Re: Replacement axle too short ?
I would try Napa right now if the coding on their website wasn't all screwy right now.
check it out www.napaonline.com

These are the online results I got:

I didn't pick a store, but you get the idea.
