Question for 04-05 Civics with autos
Question for 04-05 Civics with autos
My car will be 4 years old in a week!
So like many of the 01-03 autos, they kick. Actually ALL HONDA AUTO TRANNIES FROM THE LATE 90s TO EARLY 2000 SUCK. Remember all the recalls? or the lack of them for the civics... Anyways time to start thinking about a replacement. The kicks i get are not actually that bad anymore after atf changes in the last 15k miles, but the fact of the matter is that a non properly functioning tranny at 60k miles is very annoying.
My question is, for those with 04-05's, do you guys have tranny problems? I know the 04-05 autos were made in japan, unlike most of the 01-03s. I also know that the 04-05 trannies will work with the older 7thgens as long as the ecu is reprogrammed. obviously that means that the 01-03 and 04-05 transmissions are not the same.
also i need to mention I have a 7 year/100k mile honda care warranty. The dealership gave it to me for free when ibought the car 4 years ago. So im gonna get an oem one so i dont have to pay for a new or rebulit or built up one. The secodn question is when should i bring my car in for a new tranny? Im thinking around 80kmiles. after i get a new tranny, ill probalby add a tranny cooler. then again, im not even sure that helps much when i know theres a design flaw with the clutch.
thanks!

An occasional problem on this vehicle is failure of the second gear clutch in the Automatic Transmission. This will cause the Automatic Transmission to slip or the check engine light to illuminate.
aww you guys do not know that honda makes their own in house automatic trannies similar to manuals. Yes, theres a torque converter, but theres also a clutch. Check out this reliablity report on msn auto. http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Re...da&model=Civic

wish i knew. but they will not replace a trans that is just slipping. it has to die before they consider it to have a problem. i have one year warranty left so i hope something happens by then or the bill is on me. and i would opt for an 04-05 trans hoping they fixed the clutch pack carrier.
gearbox, is that for the dealership or for honda? cuz i think there are ppl on the forum who got new trannies under warranty before their tranny died.
if you want, just do some nuetral drops...

2001 civic sedan auto tranny
- Running at 155,000 km, only changed Tranny fluid once tranny feels fine to me.
- Only thing i notice with 7th gens when you slow down and gas it quickly right after it jerks really badly... I hate that

i replaced my trans fluid with bg synthetic trans fluid and is working great. gears change silky smooth once the tranny has been warmed up. so far so good and ive been beating my tranny(not neutral drops but wot several times)

So any more experiences from 04-05 civics with autos?

well you cant help doing that. if you take a turn chances are you're just under 20mph and you will need to gas it to go. if you ease on the gas its less of a thunk, but sometimes it happens and the whole car shakes.
i have an 02 tranny that sucks. but im on warranty for another 15k km, im thinking right before my warranty is up, to purposely blow the tranny so that it gets fixed for free
edit - which just made me realize, i bought the car at 40k, now im at 85k and it hasnt been a full year ive had the car!! 70% city too
