DIY: Taking Apart your M3 Mirrors
DIY: Taking Apart your M3 Mirrors
This can be a really good if you are trying to either change the LED color for legal or personal reasons. Or if you are going to paint the mirrors or have them sent to paint, this can be really helpful.
Here is the pieces you should be left with after everything is dissasembled

The mirror pulls off but be gentle there are (4) plastic clips on the mirror holding it to the plastic rotor piece behind it.
Now remove the rotor piece by taking out the (3) gold screws around it.
Here is the rusty metal plate. It is removed by the (3) screws that hold it to the mirror.

Now you will have a small metal strip with (2) screws on the ends. Simply removed those and your LED array will come out. The clear plastic is not held to the LED cluster and will pop out. To remove the backing of the LED cluster so you can change them, simply remove the two small screws holding the reflective foil over the LEDs.
The mirror is actually (3) large pieces, the mounting plate, the mirror housing, and the strut. These (2) springs connect the strut to the mirror housing. They are not difficult to remove but you need to be careful as they are attached to plastic rods on the mirror housing.
Here it is again all disassembled and put into a separate small baggie to hold the small parts and screws.
Here are a few more tips:
-I labeled the baggies (Left and Right) so it would be much easier when re-installing.
-I put all the larger parts of one mirror and its parts bag into another container to keep them separate.
-Make sure you cover the mirror itself with either a cloth or newspaper to protect it from damage while it is off.
-I will be using Rustoleum on the metal plate that is rusted to prevent further corrosion.
-I will also be putting clear silicone around the plastic cover for the LED array so that it will be sealed from weather.
