DIY: Light Color change for mirror and cruise controls

I got this sent to me by another user. I will be performing this in 2 days. Pics will be posted hopefully.

Products Needed:
- Philips head screw-driver
- Small Flat-head screw-driver (or something similar, used for prying)
- Colored Condoms that can be purchased from http://www.partsexpress.com Get the .12" DIA LAMP COVER BLUE 10PK part number 070-086.

Procedure
1. Empty out your coin tray

2. Inside you will see one philips screw which you will need to remove

3. Pop that whole dash-piece off. Just pull, it comes right off.

4. Un-plug the wires to the various switches.

5. You should now have that whole assembly seperated from the dash

6. Each of those buttona pops out from the dash-piece, you might have to push a little hard. Be careful of the mirror button, there's a metal fastener that falls off - it can easily be put back on though, just don't lose it. Pop each of the switches out one at a time.

7. We'll do the cruise button first - there's two 'tabs', one on the top and one on the bottom of the switch. Use these to remove the front cover of the switch. Again, there's a small plastic piece that could fall out. Don't lose that. Take out the bulb. On one side of the switch is a round 'thing' (I don't know what else to call it useing the flat-head screw-driver, turn it a quarter turn to the left (counter-clockwise) and then pull it out. You might need to use your screw-driver and tap the bulb from the other end, because it's a little tricky. Remove the green colored 'condom' that's on the bulb. It pulls right off, just wiggle a little bit. Once it's off, replace put on your new condoms and the bulb and lock it in place. Carefully put the switch cover back on, and set it aside.

8. The person who made the DIY has an LX and does not have a sunroof. I will post how to do the sunroof switch later when I actually perform this project.

9. Now, the mirror switch. On the back you'll find 4 slots; use your flat-head to pry the back piece off. It takes a little finesse - do the bottom two first, then the top two. Once it's off, you'll see the light bulb is soddered into the circuit-board. Again, take the condom off the bulb. Put on the new condom(s). Now, carefully replace the cover.

10. Put each switch back into it's socket on the dashboard piece. Remember the metal piece for the mirror.

11. Plug each switch back in again

12. Replace the entire assembly back into the dash, so that the tabs all click into place.

13. Put the screw back in

14. Re-fill your change cup

15. Wait until dark, or find a dark garage, and then turn on your headlights to see how it looks.

ak suggested using 2 covers per bulb. This makes it more blue but it still comes out teal colored. 3 covers makes it too dark he says. Read his other thread to find out about putting covers onthe bulbs.

Question, that metal fastener, how is that supposed to be put back on? Mine fell off and I'm not sure where it goes.. is it that imperative that you have it on, or will everything wiggle around?

blazed870 is on a distinguished road
I just did my cruise and mirror bulbs tonight. 2 condoms is good on the center light of the cruise, the one that is green stock. I did 2 condoms on the other bulb on the cruise and the one on the power mirrors and it is way to dark for me, I think I am going to take one condom off of them tomorrow. As for that metal clip, I got lucky and mine stayed on, but if I remember correctly it goes on the top part, the part above "mirror" and if you were pushing the mirror switch back in, then it should make a V with the bottom of the V pointing inward and the opening of the V facing you.

K, i'll give it a shot once I get more condoms. They sent me green instead of blue . Although these blue condoms seem more like a greenish/blue tealish color :/

does anyone have any pics yet to see if it was worth it. Too bad I dont have a credit card otherwise I would have ordered all those covers like ak said you needed for the center dash and I would have done those already. I really want to see the pics if it is worth it or not. BTW flyrice... good DIY, you should have posted some pics thanks.

so i've seen a couple of people that are disapointed with the color of their blue led's, saying that they appear to be teal. Since I don't want to have this problem and i am familiar with soldering does anyone know what kind of L.E.D from radio shack I would need, & which resistor it would require. Thanks as usual in advance. I'll be doing the center console with gel's i've seen some pictures and those look great.
