neon wiring (no more cig adapter)
neon wiring (no more cig adapter)
ok i want to wire all my red neon lighting in my car without having to power them through the cig adapter. i have SOME idea of soldering and tapping and that kind of stuff, but im still unclear on the fuse box stuff.
after doing some searching, i found that some people used the fuse box as a power source for their interior lighting accesories, etc. but how? how does the fuse box act as a power soruce? what the heck is a fuse? (sorry a little dumb on electrical stuff)
and i wanna do this to, hook up my neons to the fuse box. how please? i also have the idea of hooking it up to the headlight switch so whenever i power the headlights, they turn on too. eh?
edit: after reading s2000man01's post on his wiring, it seems as though he wired it so that whenever the dome light or door opens, his neons come on too. sounds like a good idea, but then he also says that he wires it so that he can turn on the neons with a swithch whenever he wants. how does that work? thanks!

A fuse is is an object that is connected between a power source and a load (neons). It's made to handle up to a certain ammount of current, so if any more current flows through, it pops. This prevents too much current from flowing into the load, which prevents it from damage.

omg, just use the sig lighter and get a splitter. I have two neons plugged into a cig switch, and one more empty socket under the seat. Don't waste all your time for nothing.

sorry dude, i just HATE the clutter (as in a plug in the cig lighter and wires runnin down the cosnole).
UPDATE: i found the headlight harness in the steering column (the plugs and wires that connect the headlight switches and signal switches to the car). but i dont know which one is the headlight power source. theres a DIY that says its the red/blue wire, but thers two of them!
i ultimately want it so that when i turn on my headliughts, them neons come on since ill be tapping the headlight switch wire.
EDIT: oh yeah for this 12in neon im hooking up, do i need a fuse?

i think its better if u wire it to the dome light and try and hook it up to the cig as well, so they come on when u open the door, and wen u turn on ur car.
is that possible?.
btw, where do i get a splitter at gearbox? radio shack will do right?

If you go grab yourself a relay (any ol' electronics or car audio shop will have them for like 5 bones), you will find 5 tabs on it, labelled 85, 86, 87a, 87, and 30. You can use spade connectors to hook it up. Check out the12volt.com for more on relays. It took me forever to wrap my head around it, but thanks to a lot of the guys on here plus that 12volt site, I finally got it.
