Questions about stripped lug bolt
My Powerslot rotors arrived yesterday and I began happily installing them. The driver's side went on absolutely perfect, which should probably have tipped me off that the passenger's side was going to be a bitch.
It all started when I tried to remove the wheel. Seems one of the lug nuts got cross-threaded. How the hell that happened I don't know. I drove it down to a local mechanic and had him remove the nut with an air wrench, which stripped out the nut and stripped all the threads off the lug bolt - but I expected that.
I took my car back home, pulled the wheel off and attempted to remove the rotor. The two phillips head screws that hold it on were frozen in place, and I didn't have any WD-40 handy, so I had to put the wheel back on and go buy some. I manged to get one screw to break free, but the other wouldn't budge. By this time I was already late getting to my girlfriend's house, so I put everything back together and gave up for the time being.
I called Midas today to see if they could replace my stripped bolt, and they said it would be ~$80.
I have a couple questions, maybe Grey will have some insight on this one: What is involved in replacing a lug bolt? Would I be able to do it myself?
What other shops should I check for a lug bolt replacement? I don't really want to spend $80 on it.
I figure I'll have the slap the other Powerslot on while they're at it since they have to remove the rotor anyway They'd better do that for no extra charge too!

DIY, I stripped one of my lug bolts at the track on sunday. It's a $4 part to replace. Just pull off the caliper and put the new bolt on yourself. That's what I'm gonna do.
easy procedure, should basically pop on and off, i replaced all four on my old acura legend and it was like 8 bucks a piece (possibly 4 for civic dont know) and it came out and went in easily, good luck

I'm a little confused. You say the lug bolt just pops off? So what, you smack the tip of it with a mallot until it comes out the back of the hub, then tap another one in?
Sorry, I'm having trouble getting the whole mental imagery thing goin.

i hate to tell you this but you can not do it yourself. the hub has to be pulled. i had the same thing happen to me, i tried to do it myself and found that the stud dosen't clear the back side of the spindle. take it to a shop or dealer and let them do it. also what kind of lug nuts do you have on your car? when i bought my car i got the wheel option and the lugs they put on were grey and look like alluiminum. they are the reason you x-threaded the lug. they are to soft of a material. i recommened that you replace all your lug nut or you will have to do it again in the future. good louck.

I dropped it off at Big-O on my lunch break. They said they'd replace the bolt and install my Powerslot rotor while they were at it for $35. I'm happy with that.
My lug nuts aren't aluminum, they're definitely steel. What quality steel I'm not sure, but they seem to be pretty good quality. I don't know how it got cross-threaded. I put that weel on about a week ago when I changed my brake pads, and I know I didn't cross-thread it when I put it on. I always start the nuts by hand and then torque them down with a wrench. I dunno. Oh well.
