Gains from synthetic oil?
Do you guys think if I used synthetic oil for the engine/trans, i will see any gains vs right now using the conventional stuff? Ive heard somewhere that you can gain around 2-5 hp from that just due to the reduced friction and heat. I think someone should dyno this.
I used sytec, i loved the stuff, change the filter every 2-3k miles and you dont have to change the oil as offen, just keep checking it to see how dirty it is, i went like 6-7k with out changing it, it just didnt need it, and its like the blood line of ya car, so it helps alot of the internals
i use royal purple oil, they have a racing oil line but it does not conform API and / or ILSAC's licencing requirements......means beast gains out of synthetic oil....Im just buying the normal motor oil.

it's true that a syn. oil can reduce friction, resulting in small (real small) gains in power. Mostly it cuts heat and friction....but somone said that they go for 6k-7k without changing the oil. they say that you only need to change the filter. this is wrong. just because the oil isn't dirty, doesn't mean it needs to be changed. syn. is good for a wile, but the viscosity brakes down fast in a syn.!! it may be clean, but not protecting what you need. you should change your syn. as much as regular oil......also, you should NOT use syn. in an engine that has less than 10k miles on it. the syn. works TOO well and can cause problems in slipping of your piston rings, and other key spots of lubercation.

Just get whatever you want. Synthetic oil won't be of much benefit unless you race & your engine has to deal w/ v. high temperatures.
If you use a thicker oil, it'll provide better protection for stop & go driving & stuff, but you will loose some power, as more work needs to be done to push it around.. i wouldn't recomend going thinner than Honda recomends, as it won't provide enough protection.

To answer the question posed by this thread:
I remember reading an article years ago. It was about REDLINE synthetic fluids in an automatic 5.0 mustang. They dynoed the car with stock fluids then again with redline. Bear in mind that they changed EVERYTHING. Including radiator fluids and automatic tranny fluid. After all was said and done, they gained roughly 5-8HP. That was with an ineffiecient big displacement engine. Our little engines probably would see next to nothing as far as gains on the dyno. I personally use MOBIL1 synthetic and did not notice any power gains when I switched.

I'm running Mobile 1 Full Synthetic... I love it. I could feel a slight difference when I changed it but it was probably psychological.

Go to Mobil1's web site and click on WHY SYNTHETICS, and then MYTHS ABOUT SYNTHETICS and read it. It's not the synthetic that causes leaks, it's the crappy dino oil that has gasket-swelling additives.

I just changed and put in mobil 1 syn 0w20......love the stuff.. car runs quieter, idles smoother. very nice stuff. plan on pushing back my average oil change time to 4000 from 3000. Maybe i dont need to change it that often, but i'd just feel better doing it
I changed from synthetic to regular oil and back all the time in my old 94 civic that I sold away. I usually switch to synthetic during winter and back to reg oil in summer to save money. The synthetic stays viscous during winter so it is better able to protect the engine during start up.
