Budget for full K-Swap (college student)

Hi Guys new to the forums so bump me if im doing something wrong lol. Anw straight to the point I bought my 02 civic lx 5 speed about a month ago and last week my input shaft bearing started to act up. Just hit the 180k mark so Im pretty familiar with it coming up. Some shops around here in az are asking $1500 and up for the input shaft bearing fix and thats too much for me rn for the value of the car. I was thinking if I would just save up for a decent daily k swap (it needs to be a daily cuz i have college and work). Wanted to know the budget I would need to setup for it? It currently has stock d17a2 non vtec right now and everything works heater/ac/ps was hoping the k swapped version would also have those. Hope to get info from the experts! (Also hoping for the cheapest build college students have tight funds lol.)

Re: Budget for full K-Swap (college student)

Back in the day, the cost to DIY this swap was in the realm of $6k+

Re: Budget for full K-Swap (college student)

$6k?!?! Hopefully not that much today and diy is not an option i live in an apartment with only covered reserve parking spots so a shop will have to do the swap (even tho i was hoping I could diy it)

Re: Budget for full K-Swap (college student)

A big part of that 6k price tag was the fact that the engine and tranny was expensive to come by. Last time I looked at a K20, it was like 2-3k for a low-ish mileage K20A (JDM DC5-R/CTR) with engine harness, ecu, and tranny with LSD

Re: Budget for full K-Swap (college student)

Ok I see, hmm how much would labor come out to be? Will my ac ps and heater still work the same? Will I have to also purchase the accessory parts for those or will my d17 accessories fit on the k20

Re: Budget for full K-Swap (college student)

Was gonna edit, but you already responded. I dunno where I found the 2-3k price tag before, since all my searches are yielding 3.5-4k for full engine/tranny/ecu assemblies. Labor costs? Couldn't tell you. It'd be dependent on the shop, their labor prices, their familiarity with k20 swaps into the EM2/ES1 chassis, etc.

Re: Budget for full K-Swap (college student)

k20, be it an -a, -a2, or -a3 will be the "easiest" ones to swap into a 7thgen. The only thing that will be rather headache-free to swap into your engine bay would be what it came with: a D17A1. A D17A2 (ex-trim engine, 1.7L SOHC VTEC) will require a slight bit more work to swap in because of VTEC

Re: Budget for full K-Swap (college student)

I’ll probly just grab a junkyard 5 speed tranny and hope that its in good condition lol. What would be the ball park for a junkyard 5 speed and the labor for throwing it in?

Re: Budget for full K-Swap (college student)

Price on a tranny: Few hundred bucks maybe? Google tells me a used/salvaged tranny will go for 800-1500
Labor: Likely 500-1000 depending on the shop?

Alternatively, synchrotech tranmissions has refurb transmissions for 800 +shipping and will arrange for pickup of the old one. There was a formerly active member that used their services on his beast of a D17 (bored out to 1.8L)

Re: Budget for full K-Swap (college student)

I'd make some calls to local transmission shops and see how much they would charge for a transmission replacement. Get prices if you supply the tranny and if you don't. Get a bunch of actual numbers (in writing or via email would be a good backup, too, just so they can't dick around with prices if you call back months later) and make your decision from there.

Re: Budget for full K-Swap (college student)

You can drive it for a long, long time with noisy ISB, but if it completely fails that could cause catastrophic damage.

Forgot my parts breakdown list, but it was under $200 for seals, Hondabond, fluid, and that bearing.

If you have a mobile mechanic or a reasonable Import repair shop work on it, you could likely supply them the parts and just pay labor. Would also be opportune time to replace the rear main seal and the clutch..

If you live in south texas/san antonio area i could easily beat that $1500 dollar price to fix your input shaft.
