Transmission Swap Question
2001 Civic LX - D17A1
Doing my first transmission swap. Is it better to lift the engine and transmission out as one piece with an engine hoist, or follow the service manual and go out the bottom with an engine support bar and a transmission jack? I inspected option 1 (both out the top) and it looks like it could just barely fit if it was turned at a slight angle...
Any experienced help in this would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Transmission Swap Question
I have always dropped the tranny out of the bottom on all my civics but I know people who swear by lifting the motor and tranny out of the top together. either way would work.

Re: Transmission Swap Question
I appreciate the reply - it really helped me. I decided to to take it out the top just because I'm going to do the mounts and timing belt and a few other things while it's out. Excited but nervous...next Thursday is the big day.

Re: Transmission Swap Question
No - probably should though! Actually, I found a pretty good posting of what I'm in for...

Has to come out at a 30 degree angle since it's 1" too wide for the body (thanks, Honda). I plan to take more off than that guy did, though.
It's seems ironic to me - I've never done anything this significant to a car but it seems like the hard stuff would be parts, mechanical connections, etc. However, I'm finding that getting advice on lifting points, etc. seems to be a mystery. I'm trying to follow the service manual closely - I'm actually taking an industrial hinge (x2) and modifying it to match the lifting bracket in the manual...overkill? Probably.

Re: Transmission Swap Question
Make sure you use good bolts for the hoist and try not to strip them. Make sure to remove pwr steering pump, alt, and ac compressor. I usually just pull my trans out the bottom. I'll be doing it again here soon, my second gear synchro is gone
