How do I know if my ECU has been modified?

Ok guys I have a question that may be stupid. I bought my car turbo'd and I am getting ready to install the AEM F/IC on it and looked at teh ECU more closely tonight and noticed that there has been some repinning done to it and I noticed that there are some wires labeled injectors and one labeled throttle body. So how do I check to see if it is stock inside?

post pictures please. sounds like the stock ecu is there and they ripped out a piggyback, but it's hard to say without seeing anything.

Re: How do I know if my ECU has been modified?

I will. So I pulled the ECU out and it has obviously been tampered with. There was a notch cut into the back side of the ECU but nothing in the notch. The wiring issue appears to be where wires were just located. there have been numerous hack wiring jobs that I have found on this car and to be honest this scares the sh*t out of me with the ECU. Any way to test it to see if there has been anything messed with?

Sometimes you need to cut a hole in the ECU to run a USB cable or something like that to plug in...

Re: How do I know if my ECU has been modified?

yeah but the d17 ecu can not be used for Kpro so what would they have needed a usb port for? should I just buy another? If anybody has a d17 manual ecu p/m me.

Just because it can't be used for Kpro, doesn't mean that they didn't have it hooked up to a dyno or another system.

Re: How do I know if my ECU has been modified?

a turbo will require changes in the ECU if not running any aftermarket.
i would be scared if there was no changes actually.

Re: How do I know if my ECU has been modified?

I think they had an aftermarket piggy back on it and yanked it out. Other than kpro there isn't a need to notch that particular ecu according to the guy at the performance shop. As long as its not messed up I dont think it matters. It will have an AEM F/IC on it in the next couple of days.

Re: How do I know if my ECU has been modified?

you could check to see if it has a hondata s100 or s200, if so i don't think you need the fi/c. the two mentioned above "Fits inside the ECU. No external wiring" and look like this.

you do need to cut a hole for a usb cable inorder to tune. the stock ecu is untunable without such modification. so there is a good chance a chip like this one is in there. find ut because they're worth a good bit of money. i was going to get one but they don't work for autos.

Re: How do I know if my ECU has been modified?

The problem with modified cars is that people do weird **** to them.

The guy at the performance shop is right, there is no point in cutting a hole for a usb cable in an untunable ECU, but that doesnt mean some genius didnt buy one of those fake performance chips off ebay or something like that.

Re: How do I know if my ECU has been modified?

yeah the previous owner of this thing is far from a genius. I have never seen so much hack job wiring on one vehicle in my life. They used a home phone line to wire the gauge pod because it had enough wires inside to hook up all the gauges-too bad it caught on fire from not being able to handle the voltage, and an extension cord to wire the oil pressure gauge.

Wow

In all fairness the extension cord wire is probably a heavier gauge then what you need, but still.

Has that black IC chip been installed by someone? Is that what your pointing out in the original picture? That looks similar to 'chrome' tuning. Burn the chip on the PC and install into the ECU.

I wish I had the code for that modchip that mac25 pictured. The raw product is worth about $4 and I own a PIC progammer

edit - oh I see your just pointing out the hole. I wish I could figure out how to delete my dumb posts.

sorry boys

Re: How do I know if my ECU has been modified?

OMG, the PO did a whack job in the car and thought it was a good turbo setup...
good luck...
yes, if that is the job they did, recommend a new ECU...
