turbo mounted in place of muffler!
Exactly what title says...ultimate sleeper...

I happened to catch this at the end of the show 'Trucks!'
Now tell me, why couldn't I just build my own version of this kit for a lot cheaper?

this has been covered b4. I think the general population of this site would agree that there would be way too much lag for that to work on our cars. I personally cant see how this thing is efficient. Think of it as plumbing. the longer the pipe the more pressure drop you have. Not to mention the restriction of a cat and the fact that cooler denser exhaust gasses compress easier and flow slower, creating more lag. These things are for the lazy people that dont know any better. Theres a reason why they put em in the engine bay, it works better, plain and simple.
I have a magazine (HCI I think) with an article on the STS remote mount turbo. They gave it a good review. They said that they had expected the same lag problem 02fpcivic mentioned, but were very suprised after driving the STS equiped ITR. Virtually no lag is what they wrote. I think you could build your own with the exception of the oil sending unit. But the right person could probably build the sending unit for a reasonable price.
Well, I read a review by Joe Pettit. He wrote a very good Honda tuning book and I know he is very knowledgable and is very respectable and he gave a very good review on it. I think it could make good power.....

i built a custom one on a 2000 Z28 camaro. I even had an intercooler. All together, it had about 15 feet of intercooler piping. But the lag was barely noticable.
If you size the turbo right, it should work fine.

Here is the HCI article if you guys wanna check it out.

i dunno about ours cars i say its pretty much useless to mount one back there, but for like LS-1 cars they are awsome. may be kind of a funky place but pulling a 11.6 is nothing to laugh at.
I think for our cars, if it would work, you would need like a stock mitsu eclipse turbo or something small like that and I bet you probably wouldnt wanna go much bigger. Its hard to say really. Try it and hope for the best. Most of us here have no experience with that set up so the best you will do is get everyones opinions.

i have heard of turbos that mount on the back of the car. its said to make no spool noise and sound completely stock. i have argued with people about it alot. i think its :bs: but i don't know about them that much. anyone else?
All the mag articles have been good about the rear mount systems. The Aug. issue of TURBO mag featured a single turbo NSX w/the remote mount system. I'm not sure if it was a STS setup or not though
lol u all r funny. They have a couple vids of camaros with theses setups going agaisnt fully built turbo hatches and u all would be suprised that the camaro was staying with the hatch only at around 7 or 8 psi while the hatch was like 20
I Ahve That Hci Mag And They Said That Because Of The Mounting Location It Cuts Down On Loss Of Power Do To Heat. Beacause The Trunk Is Alot Cooler Then The Engine Bay. Also The Turbo Piping Runs Under The Car Also Being Cooled Down As U Drive. So The Power U Loose In Lag Is Made Up In A Cooler Running Turbo. Atleast Thats What They Said. Makes Sense To Me.

I think it could work. It just seems more costly to me, You would need a smaller turbo I'd think. Lag may suck pretty badly though, but piping may not be that much longer if any.
