I think this depends on the car.
if there were to be any type of performance gain.
If someone were to run no exhaust mani, it's quite nuts.... I have seen it before on a KA24 Sentra, and little flames shoot out.

One time my friends exhaust didn't fit so we needed a custom part but only had his car so we had to drive it with just headers and it was ****ing loud but helped a lot he wanted to leave it like that but i told him not to. you could also smell the fumes inside the car at everystop light. Another one of my friends with a firebird modified his exhaust so he could unbolt something and run open headers he ran .2 seconds faster at the track.
I ran my turbo with just a downpipe for a while. It wasnt crazy loud and the thing ripped way harder. It was loud enough to attract negative attention though so I changed it. When I had my car n/a. I tryed it with HP header only. It was way slower, no midrange at all. It seemed to shift the power too high.
since i got a vp i ran straight cat and it made it slower and louder. But for me besides the sound it was street legal because i still had my cat on. Btw if anyone wants to run open header but is scared of cops and dont wanna jack the car up to disconnect then just get and e-cutout/dump tube. If u have nitrous maybe or turbo deff but not n/a. You lose hella low end cause n/a's need backpressure
