Retarding timing

In order to retard the timing 2 degrees, I do not have to have an aftermarket adjustable cam gear, do I? Or do I need to? Any advice on doing/how to do it would be great. Thanks a lot! Since we dont have a distributor Im unsure of how to do this. Gracias!

Peace

Well dude the Aem cam gear aint to expensive and you can easily tune it to negative degrees i am not sure if you can do it on the stock cam gear thats a good question though

Yeah, i was readin the directions to my kit. It said retard the timing 2 degrees to be safe. I am not sure if thats for the superior kit (which has no fuel system). But if I need to, I will need to order one reak quick. possibly ebay, I dunno how reliable they are.

wait, are you talking about retadring the cam timing, or retarding the ignition timing? both cam timing and ignition timing are non adjustable with stock parts. a cam gear is cheap, but requires you loosten tension on the timing belt. witch could mean replacing the timing belt (some manufactures require replacement when tension is relived) and you aould need some sort of ingnition controller to change ignition timing. i know the emanage with the ignition harness has the ability to retard timing, im not shure if other piggybacks do or not.

i assume your reading instructions from a nitrous kit. if you dont have the means to adjust timing, then put in 2 degree colder plugs and gap them down to about .028"

I am not reading nitrous instructions. Its for my TSI kit. The directions say retard timing 2 degrees. For a boosted car, do you need to do this, or just nitrous. I have a fuel system and everything, so I am unsure if I still need to do this. THanks a lot, sorry for sounding stupid, I just woke up

Go buy an AEM cam gear (5 bolt revised model). Install it, or have a shop do it. While they're at it, most places will also replace water pump, timing belt, crank pulley, etc for free since it's the same labor. I was quoted $250 for everything. When you adjust it, I'm pretty sure changing cam timing will also affect ignition timing on our cars. It's best to have it dyno tuned as already mentioned. I'm not sure it's a good idea to just retard it 2 deg and see what happens.

the directions said start around -2 and as you learn the characteristics, adjust it. I would just have it tuned though, so I dont have to mess with it. How many people on here retarded their timing when they went boosted? I havent heard anything about needing to do that, only with nitrous I thought? I dont wanna blow my motor though.

So how many of you retarded your timing after boosting?

you should retard timing with any heavy modifications........even all motor.

General rule is for every 50hp increase......retard timing 1 degree.

I'm advancing my timing eventually, but mine is NA, and my timing is already more retarded than stock.

Thanks a lot!! BTw, what happens when you dont, do you hear a nice kaboom followed by smoke and a dead motor? It sucks I cant do it stock. There another 200 gone from this

I didnt think I would ahve that much more to spend. The kit gets me up and boosting safely, except I need clutch, Plugs, gauges, pillar pod, adjustable cam gear, what biyatch

I forgot a few things when I was planning financially. I can afford it, but damnit. Less money for Mexico.
