Why turbo? not a flame just a question for a parent

I was asked this question today by my father. He wants to know why I want to turbo my car. So I asked him why does he drive a porsche. I would think the answers would be the same. So my question to you is why did you buy a turbo? We dont need one but we are compelled to boost and bring out the most in our cars.

It's the most cost effective way to get decent power out of an SOHC engine.

There are tons of reasons to go turbo. I'll list a few...

1. Its your hobby and you love moding cars
2. You want your car faster
3. You want to show off
4. You want to run your car at the track
5. You only live once....

I dont think the power thing will work for him he says my vic is plenty fast, and that all of the power will get me in trouble. My thing is I very rarely speed and if I do it is like 5mph over, I do not drive like an idiot and I dont just cruise around. Also I refuse to race on the street it is a personal choice. So he uses this as an aurgument that I dont need it.

It is like that cerial apple jack why do you like them we just do.

My dad agrees that the car is slow, but he won't understand spending 3K for a turbo kit when I could have just gotten a faster car.

At first I was all excited, but then realized it's alot of money for something that will probably cause damage over time. So I'm going with cheaper stuff like ported head and pulley. I don't need that much turbo power anyway, just as long as the car gets a bit faster.

Just show your parents a list of all the other cars that have more power than ours, and how civics are one of the slowest cars out there. Or just have them drive it and see for themselves

He doesnt think my car needs to be any faster. Plus he is the one that brought a very nice deal to my attention but doesnt want me to buy it, I guess I do not understand. Hell if it was my mom that brought it to my attention she would say dont pay to get it installed I will help you. She ust to build race cars when she was younger and actually helped build a nice winston car. So I get major support from the mom but a very odd vibe from my fathe.

I feel you kind of answered your own question:
"bring out the most in our cars"
besides, speed is addicting... but you know, ppl bought the Civic for different reasons.

Tell him what i told my dad...."it'll be so fricken awesome to have a car thats as quick and zippy as an eclipse or RSX but still gets 30mpg"

My parents are weird...my dads really into it, my mom just kinda doesnt care. Im in the process of building my kit and my mom doesnt really ask questions, just more like "whats this or that" But my dad thinks its awesome. hes been willing to buy me stuff too, like gauges, hoses, couplings, what not....and another way to convince your dad, just be like "if we ever go to the track...i'll be able to run with your porsche" see how he likes that

I tried the porsche argument he sees his porsche as an investment now since it is worth more than he paid. It has the widebody kit that the turbo has and has been tweaked but he knows diddly about cars just numbers like values. He doesnt appreciate a car for its power just worth he says that I have a 12k car that he paid 5k for and that if I put a turbo on it will depreciate the value which it will but I will have a rush doing it.

i aint gonna lie, cuz i like to street race. lol j/k
its just a hobby and a passion. my mom just thinks its a "man thing". she thinks its a "i got to be faster and better so i can brag" thing...which it kinda is cuz i'm modding my honda and my dad is modding his ford. the ups/fedex man comes to our door 2-3 times a week with some sort of car parts. but its just something to spend money on and since i dont have a g/f, i have LOTS to spend, lol. plus i wanna see the look on my friends face in my rearview mirror when i own his wrx with my civic, muahahahahaha!

I would explain to your dad how you are bored with the simple mods you have done on your car and want something more difficult. Tell him the time spent working on your car is what keeps you from sitting in your room at night sniffing glue and banging the next door neighbors daughter. Be logical with him and tell him if you cant work on the car you will work on the girl next door and in 9 months he will have an even bigger investment. If that doesn't work start wearing all black and leave bagys of paint laying around. He will by you the turbo kit just to keep you buisy again and off the glue.

I love that post guns but it has no relevence for me since I wear mostly black, dont sniff glue but I wish I was banging the neighbors daughter . But you do have a point on the harder mods issue he thinks I should put on an exhaust and header and put stuff in my car like a radio. That would cost just as much as the deal I am getting on a almost complete kit.

Well I guess I should devulge the deal maybe it may help. A guy that works for my da bought a full kit for his integra but doesnt want to install it because his car has 100k miles on it. He wants to sell it for $500.
It includes
garrett t3/t4 turbo
tial wastegate
blitz bov
all piping can be sold to buy piping for my car
intercooler will fit my car
oil lines
autometer gauges

all new never used parts

So realistically I would need manifold, piping, and a nice fuel system, maybe alc injection and any extra items that arise when you install.

i was honestly thinking about getting a turbo at some point, and for the longest time i was gonna get it.. but then it i had an epiphany. So i get a turbo, i have a decently fast car, and it's different, but what am i really getting out of all this for the price i'm putting into it? Then i'm thinking, for the money i put TOTAL into a turbo, with labor, gauges, maintenance, etc, that is a really nice down payment on something else much nicer and just as fast as the civic. So i've totally given up on turbo for the civic, instead i'm putting a down payment on the acura TSX. Now THAT's a car worth putting money into.. i mean, i couldn't see myself putting that much money on a car that's not even that nice (comparetively speaking of course) Now put a kit and turbo in a TSX and it just seems like a better investment than in a civic.

The thing is, you know how we say "OMG why would you spend all the money on a turbo and kit for a GEO!!" well that same thinking goes up the food chain.. geo < civic < RSX < TSX < STI < BMW < etc etc.. these are just examples, but you get my picture.. so i guess i'm moving up the food chain, so to speak..

Remember this is all IMO.. so relax.. this was my conclusion in a long thought process about getting a turbo..

I guess I think about it differently since my car was a graduation gift which means I really have no money of my own tied up in it. I dont have a car payment so it isnt like I put 14-16k out for the car then am going to spend round about 3-4k on a turbo. I have only really just put in 3-4k for a semi fast turbo civic.

I'm in the same boat you're in.

If you get [with your own money] your own kit, and mod & tune the car; you're parents will see how passionate you are about your hobby (to some parents it's a "thing"). At that point, even if they don't understand it, they have to respect it.

my mom is on my *** because im addicted to modding my car. I have sweet talked her into alot of things, but a turbo is not under the belt just yet! She told me no more spending money on my car. So of course i didn't listen and i started to do internal stuff PnP head, soon to be intake manifold.

lol. My mom did too. She used to race a lot too (9-10s 1/4 mile passes). We have a few trophies here for it. She still hooks up her cars to this day... and she's 56 years old lol. She became an anesthesiologist though, so no time for racing and whatever. But needless to say, I get support in whatever I do with my car, and it's pretty much encouraged.

The reasons why I would say to turbo would probably be down the list of what someone said earlier, that would be experience, love of a project/modding/hobby, and more power. Showing off isn't really my style though

I guess that I really can't totally understand b/c I haven't lived w/ my parents in over 3 years and my parents think it is the coolest thing anyways but-
I think that by explaining that this is your passion, that you could be out selling drugs or something and that it may lead you to be a better person (more patient, more educated) may help.
You know the other thought is, what parent HAS NOT spent their young adult years NOT being into cars? My parents were into Camaros, GTO's and raced them on the streets for $. You could also add that point.
Not to make myself sound like an old lady but I am a 25 year old girl whomarried and I love this #&$t- it is my passion!

i told my mom i wanted turbo for my birthday, then i told her the price. she laughed. my dad says do whatever becouse i pay for all the parts in my car and i don't live with either one of them. yall say hobby and passion, it's an obsescion! plus i come by it honestly. i got my civic, dad got a miata, raced and he won. i got a whole bunch of bolt ons he got a vortech supercharger, so i got a 60 shot of nitrous just till i can get my turbo. and he still isn't boosted, had the damn thing for almost a year.

I agree with the last post. It is an obsession. What's nice about turbo is that you dont have to upgrade the same parts for more power. Simply add some pistons and rods to turn up the boost. Add a boost controller, new bov, bigger exhaust blah blah...

All I'm saying is that FI is a COMPLETELY different atitude in tuning. People have different goals.

In all honesty though, if you dont like to speed (which is good!), then a turbo may not be a necessary thing for your car. But... If the race track is something you'd like to get into... it's the only way I see you being able to be competitive with much faster cars that are out there. Plus you get much more respects having a turbo 2001 up honda.

When I pulled up at the track in october when I first put the turbo on my 02... a guy from a supra, along with a turbo hatch came over to me to compliment how nice of a job I did. People just appreciate that kind of stuff.

If you are or plan on racing at the track go for it. If not, your dad's right. There's no need for it. Spend that money on some ICE or body work and get a car that you'll actually be able to appreciate what you put into it whenever you drive it. Good luck man.
