If im going the turbo route with a 01 ex manuel,, what would be the most usefull gauges?? I could see Air/Fuel for monitoring the fuel and a Boost gauge for what boost at, but ive see some with oil pressure and some with oil temp? what would be the best 3rd gauge? Also does anyone know a good turbo timer/ boost controller for a decent price?
Well the hotter the exhaust temps the leaner your car is running, and the richer the cooler the temps will be. I will actually be getting a rough tune on my car through my EGT gauge. Then make a 3 hour drive to dyno tune.

if ur getting autometer get all electrical that way ur not sending things like oil or fuel into the cockpit of ur car, a Autometer AF guage is relatively useless, zinkyroo has a greddy and its tight, anything by blitz is tight, all DEFi guages are tight but look to spend 150-200 a guage. i just have boost and use a feul pressure guage when necessary.
EGT is worthless unless you know which side of sto you are on. richer doesn't mean cooler, over rich will bring up your EGT readings as well.
if you want gauges, get all with warning lights.
oil press, fuel press, and boost are the 3 must gets to save your motor in case of a failure.
oil pump failure will take your car to the grave as fast as blink of an eye.
fuel press drop during boost will do the same for you with a boom
boost spike isn't that pleasant neither.
after all has been said, why did i say warning lights? well... how many people check all the gauges every other second? if any of the previous event happen and you don't know about it to let off the throttle and shut off the car within seconds, you can say bye to the motor.
yes.. eletrcial warning gauges are expansive, but they will be more useful than eye candy. many people have gauges, but yet, when **** happens, they still don't know about it. since they are so use to the gauges after the first day, they never look at them anymore. any gauges without warning lights are only good for drag cars, since on the track you can focus on looking at all gauges for that few sec you are dashing down the strip. but for long road trips, i don't think anyone can scan all gauges every other sec without getting tired...
defi makes awesome warning gauges with chain link abiliity which makes install less messy.
as far as EGT goes, don't bother with it. unless you take your car to the dyno with wideband and map every a/f value to the temp and you are sure which side of the sto you are on every time you look at your EGT... so EGT is pretty much worthless.
If you want to tune the car yourself, get yourself a windband with logging. get a g tech pro and hit the track. if you are new, j&s safeguard will save you from your mistakes.

With EGT, you need to run your car on a wideband and mark the readings while reading your EGT. But you will find, at every point on the lean side, you will find the same reading on the rich side. e.g. 12:1 for most hp yield. 13:1 can be 1100 degrees while 11:1 can also be 1100 degrees.
So, EGT is only useful if you have already gauged it with a wideband. Or rather, you are just using it to make sure there is nothing wrong with your car, not for tuning.
