Temp Gauge Working/Not Working

New to this forum so please be gentle. lol

Have a 04 Civic and the temp gauge it being a little funny.

Was driving and noticed the gauge was still on cold after driving it for a while. Got to my destination and turned the car off then back on and the gauge was working perfect. Some times its working great other times it doesn't work at all?

Any ideas? Is it the temp sensor?

Thanks

Re: Temp Gauge Working/Not Working

Also does the 01-05 civics have 3 coolant sensors like the prev generation did?

Re: Temp Gauge Working/Not Working

No codes or check engine light
Ok then run the gauge sweep test (cluster self test) to see if all the gauges are capable of operating correctly.
Best to do this test WHILE it's acting up, because if you do it while everything works you most likely won't find a problem..

You could also try smacking the dash while the gauge shows low, see if that gets it working again.

7th gen uses a single coolant temp sensor for the computer and gauge.
Previous versions used two separate sensors.
All of those use a separate temp switch to run the fan(s).

7th gen:
The PCM reads the temp sensor, then sends that info to the gauge cluster through a data bus along with RPM and VSS info....

If there is a total failure (open circuit) of the temp sensor it should set a code in the PCM---- but just inaccurate might not set a code.

This system gives a person more ways to diagnose though IMO, simply get a scanner that can read the computer data (live datalist) and see what the coolant temp reads from the PCM and compare to what the gauge says. Then decide if someone is lying, and who.
