advice

I've got a 1997 Honda Civic, bought used 2 years ago for $2,800. Engine still driving strong, but has had a clutch repair not long after buying it, and now needs ANOTHER clutch (starting to slip), is missing the rear bumper (stupid accident), a brake job, unknown suspension work (per the tire man)..the steering wheel shakes when I drive and there is no cushioning at all from bumps, at least one tire replaced and an alignment.

This is my only car and money is tight, though sometimes it is easier just to get another one and payment monthly payments rather than come up with a lump sum amount for repairs (and yes, these things are all happening at once, not neglected). If I have some sort of suspension problem, the clutch repair, brakes, 1-2 tires, and an alignment, is it "worth it". Also, the A/C went out not long after I bought it and I've had that checked and was told I'd need a total repair, which is NOT worth it, I know. I would like some input on it, and where in Chicago (preferably north) that I could get some reasonable estimates. Thanks.

Re: advice

Have you ever crawled under your car and taken a look at things? You don't have to be a mechanic to spot something that is wrong.
It sounds like your struts are blown, and as far as the clutch goes: pick up an exedy oem clutch off of ebay I've seen them run around $60 and have an experienced friend help you put it in. In regards to the A/C have someone you know and trust look at it. What exactly does a "total repair mean" wtf is he repairing? The condenser, the compressor, the lines? You need to ask these questions and have him show you the problem don't just listen to him. He is probably just going to recharge the system and call it a "total repair".

All of your problems didn't just happen all at once. Your brakes don't all at once get shitty, they wear down, your tires wear out, your clutch can wear out, and you did something to knock your car out of alignment, that problem has probably been there a little while.
(and yes, these things are all happening at once, not neglected).
All of these aforementioned things are things you neglected and could have been taken care of instead of compiling on you.
