Smoked by "unknown" car ??

So im driving home at around 2am on a Monday night. Suddenly, I hear a loud muffler with turbo thats sounded as if it was struggling. Since my windows are so dark I could not make out the car since it was behind me. He could not help but to "SHOW OFF" his turbo, I kept hearing VROOM VROOM VROOM, it was obvisous he wanted to race. Luckily the light turned red and i FINALLY got a look at the car.... Though i could not tell what it was, this is what i can tell you about it.

1. Around 86-92 (?) Really old, Muffler was shot.
2. Turbo. Though it sounded as if it were about to give, It was still a Turbo.
3. Look very similar to a older SAAB or VOLVO
4. Name of the car started with XTR, I know for a fact it started with an X not sure of the other letters.

Anyways, the light is still red. And this kid is "DESPERATLY" trying to look in to the car. He could not see me, but i was watchin his *** .
I still continues to VROOM VROOOM and an ocassional VROOOOOOOMMMMMM. I back down from no car, even if it was the HKS WRX , You come beside me VROOOOMING your bound to be raced.J/K. So anyways the light turns GREEN
So i launch at 3800 and flew past him and had about a 3 car gap at around 40 mph, 50 mph 1 car gap, at 60 we were even, at 70 mph he had a car and a half on me when i hit 90mph, before i shifted into 4th and i was on his *** again, he slammed on his brakes and made a turn, right when i caught up.
Though this car sounded as if it were a 1954 John Deere with a supercharger, it was pretty quick.

Does anyone know what kind of car this was ??? Please let me know. Im very curious.

I think its probley a German car. Thanks

Uhhh, crappy late 80's cars. They all look alike in the dark. Maybe it was an old rx7 turbo-2? I dunno but those old rotarys start soundin like lawnmowers after years of abuse and misuse.

I think you called it when you said XR4Ti.

US Turbo 2.3 4-cylinder + German Ford from mid to late 1980's = Merkur (say "mare-coor")

Ford let Lincoln-Mercury dealers import them in the 80's and I was really interested in buying one at the time, but I'm glad I didn't because they didn't sell many and Ford quit selling them pretty fast--kinda like the Edsel Now there are just a handfull and DIZZLE is probably lucky he saw one that is still running

Yup, XR4Ti, they are quite fast. Guy at work had one until he traded it in for a Mini S.

But ya, they look like Saab's if you're not familiar with them.

I used to have a mint XR4Ti MERKUR. That thing hauled *** I had no problems with GSX's ever. The most fun car ever to drive, even better than my brother's WRX, it shocked the hell out of a few V8's when this 4 door 4cyl either kept up or beat them down.

Thanks for the info guys. I thought i knew just about every car on the road, guess not.

Does anyone know if this thing is INTERCOOLED?
Maybe thats why the Turbo sounded as if it were running hot or something
