Is this normal?

I always race my friends 2k1 civic sedan automatic. I have an 02 EX coupe auto....and whenever we race, he almost instantly puts a good car length on me on the launch, and by the time second hits, he puts another car length on me, and as we hit the end of second, another car length.. so total 3 lengths... my car has 4,000 miles, and his has around 25,000, I REALLY HOPE ITS THE MILAGE .. what do you guys think? PS- i bought my car with 160 miles on it.. i hope no one did damage to the engine before i got a hold of it

Maybe you got the numbers mixed up on what you supposed 12+ hp your intake gives you. Maybe its negative 12 hp to your pansy automatic.

Brake torque would have nothing to do with the gains in second gear. Engine break in does have some to do with it, but with 4k already you can safely say your car is where itll be for a while as long as you take care of it.

Only thing i could guess is that your torque converter is damaged and not transferring as much power to your wheels as his is. Or perhaps he is doing a fake manual shifting pattern and your just mashing teh gas and letting the car pick your gears. Ive also heard that the HX with the auto CVT tranny has better acceleration than the EX 4 speed auto. Dunno what else it could be. Do you have a heavy azz system in the back or something?

Well damn man.....why did you get rid of that priceless kickass intake? That thing had to be the best one made for our cars. I can't believe someone would give up an intake that gave em 12+ hp to the frickenwheels !!!!

Its not. Go to edmunds.com and readup. CVT is slower shifting and does not allow for use of much torque. Again readup.

yes it does, if the car is relatively the same, whatever happens in the beginning will happen at the end, gets a jump in 1st, so in essence, he's already at a higher RPM then him, meaning that he will shift to second faster, third, fourth and fifth, remember these are both autos, not much room for error, except for the initial launch, which is pretty hard to screw up.

that's probably because, they finally figured out how to drive the car, after 40k miles, we should hope to assume that they figured out all the tricks.

Azn, your theory is ... screwed up. Cars, after around 40k miles, do become faster. For example they had a Lexus IS @ 1k miles it did 0-60 in 8.8S, then after 40k, same test... 7.8S a full sec faster. There's no "learning" how to drive the car, you just floor it (in the case with this slushbox)

and AK you lose too!? you have a manual though haha. I feel the pain. Time for a B-series bruiser!

Ok, here goes...
Please read *guide to drag racing an automatic.... An automatic is fine if oyu know how to shift it, yes shift...
My friend peels out in his auto because he learned how, im almost afraid to race the guy now, since the other eclipse we run with finally beat me with me having a spectator in the car....
Anyway, I can't tell you exactly how to do it, this is why i recommend th thread (above). But if you play with it you are bound to get faster.
I agree that the start is inversely affects the race, when I plow out of the whole passt a gt-s the only reason they catch up when I shift to 3rd is becuase they have 180 hp, and were suped further...
If it was 140 or 150 they probably wouldn't come near me at least till 4th....
My standing is with aznsmtboy, and again, read that thread... It bothers me to see it everytime when I don't have an automatic and I'm not sure poeple are using it's recources..
