What? A D17 build? Heck, why not? I've been reading about how this engine has no natural potential for 10+ years, I figured I'd give it a shot. Plus, it's smog friendly and not a project that leaves me car less, if I don't complete it over the weekend. It's relatively cheap and gives me an engine for the next 200k miles. Beats a new car payment. Be warned, this may take a while, cause I've already got a perfectly good engine in the EM2 now, and a K20A waiting in the wings. The stars just sort of aligned for this build.
So what's the plan? Not sure yet, but I'll he picking up a long block soon. Found one for $100. Next is a D16Y8 intake off eBay. Pann Auto sold me a Stage 1 Crower for $275. I'll save the hotter cams and K Pro for later, this is sort of a budget build for now. Haha. Let's get this out of the way now. I'm not a mechanic, by any means, but I am pretty good with my hands and have the resources to get things done. I'll be hitting you all up for some advice more often than not. Let's start with these:
1) Will a JUN cam pulley for the Pre-1999 SOHC D-16 work for me. Pann Auto has one, and it just looks badass. I really want this JDM piece of eye candy.
2) They also have an old school JDM GUDE(?) D series throttle body for sale. Ultra rare, old school part with billet, anodized parts. Wow, just wow. Same question.
3) I plan on using titanium retainers, coated valves, supertech valve springs, etc. on the head. Any drawbacks on use with the stage one cam?
4) The head, of course, will be ported and polished. Any other advice concerning the head?
5) I'll be trying to get custom made Arias forged pistons and connecting rods. Don't ask why, let's just say I have the same namesake as the company. I used the same pistons in my beetles. Can I go higher compression?
6) As for the crank, what are my options here?
That's it for now. I don't want to get ahead of myself.
What's the goal here? Ultimately, a badass D17, of course. Worst case scenario, I'll have a rebuilt head and Y8 manifold on my existing engine.
Let the journey begin...

Re: Maxtierney's D17A2 Build Thread
I think the throttle body will fit the y8 manifold pretty easily. You didn't say what year and trim it's from though. And yeah, you need a piggy back or standalone to do the y8 manifold swap. The stock D17 computer has a panic attack when you make any major intake changes smh...
As for the crank, you could stay stock. I heard Honda's cranks can last well up to 500+ horsepower. But a nice billet crank would be pretty sweet.
Heres some info on the cam gear

Looks like you would just have to use a y8 camshaft. If you want I can compare the specs of a stock y8 cam and an a2 cam tomorrow
Good luck on the build though. Sounds like it's going to be pretty sweet.

Re: Maxtierney's D17A2 Build Thread
Thanks ya'll. Step one. Heading up to L.A. this weekend to check out a complete D17A2 drop-in, with a tranny even. $400 seems like a pretty good deal for a 2005 (with 70K miles). A bit more than the $100 long block I initally wanted to buy, but this one has EVERYTHNIG, sensors, alternator, tranny, etc. I can piece out whatever I don't use. Hopefully, it's as advertised.
