Anyone Hearin' This?
I've had my springs (Neuspeed Sports) installed for about a month and I've noticed a clanking or rattling coming from the springs whenever I hit SMALL bumps and holes in the road. I've seen threads describing this before but I don't think anyone has really solved the problem. Fed up with the annoying noise, I took it to Honda and they were very sketchy about touching it at first cuz' it was lowered, but I convinced them to take a ride and a look to see where this noise is really coming from. So they did and the guy said it's cuz' the metal spring is bouncing or rattling against the metal cup that it sits in and there's no buffer to stop it from doing that. He said, normally, the stock springs come with a type of plastic melted onto the bottom of the spring to prevent the rattling noise, but obviously my Neuspeeds don't have this. He said it's not causing damage, just an annoying clanking noise. Does anyone recognize this?? And if so, is there anything I can do to make the rattle stop?? Thanks!

I am not sure if this will work or not, but I have heard of things called coil insulators. They are plastic sheaths that wrap around your coil to prevent noise.

yup its right.. noise is caused by the springs rubbing/hitting the lower perch(the thing the spring sits on). my stock springs didnt even come with anything. its supposed to but it didnt.. as rob said you use spring isolators. basically its a rubber tubing that goes around the coils on your springs.. you can also use anything from a hose(kinda thick tho) to cable wrap. that sounds like it works best, might not even have to take the springs off the car... you can find it at radio shack. just wrap it around the bottom coils on the spring and it should be gone. i have noises too but too lazy to take care of them. its not doing any damage so dont really care

Thanks guys. I used the Radio Shack coil wrap once before to stop the creaking noise when I would turn the wheels, so I still have some of that left over. Last night, I took out my stock springs and there was a coil isolator made of rubber adhered to the bottom of the springs, so I pryed that off and jacked up my car. Unfortunately, because the bottom of the springs fit snugly in the cup or lower perch, I can't get in there to wrap the isolator around the coil. So it looks like taking the springs off is the only way to do it right.
But thanks for the 2nd opinion. I can't stand the noise.

i'm having the same noises. i just got my springs installed like a week ago. but i was told that these noises would be expected. are you having mainly when you turn ur steering wheel to the left? it's like, as you turn the steering wheel more, gradually you start to hear more and more clanking noises and the louder it gets. it only happens to the front left spring/shock. but not the right. strange.

No, I fixed the steering noise using the cable wrap from Radio Shack. It cost like 3 bucks. Just buy it, jack up your car and slide the wrap around the dead coils (ones not being used) of your springs. That should take care of the steering noise. The springs rub against each other when you turn the wheel and it causes it to creak like that. So the coil provides a buffer, and that's an easy fix. NOW, I'm hearing the clanking when I hit small bumps in the road cuz' my springs are rattling against the metal cup that they sit in. So I think I need to remove the springs and wrap them in the coil isolators that came on my stock springs. If I were you, I'd do the same thing if you're still hearing noises. Unless, you're like VNlilMan and don't mind it.

lol ya i want a quiet ride too but too lazy to even bother with it
oh while your at it, you also might want to check the alignment of the top perch.. you know the rubber thing the spring goes into, one side is narrower then the other, the end of the spring should go on the narrow side. that and the spring isolators should give you a quiet ride..
oh and your the one who used cable wrap.. it was a good idea.. big ups to ya man..
