Rep Power: 0 Replacing rear struts on '02 Civic EX
It's actually a Cdn Acura 1.7 EL, but I use either the US civic Si or EX sedan when ordering parts.
In any event, I need to replace my rear struts. I replaced them a few years ago with cheap (probably Monroe) all-in-one struts (incl spring and everything) but they quickly started to make noise. Now they're annoying as you know what.
I want to put the KYB GR-2 struts in, but it seems they don't have an all-in-one drop in, so I need the rest of the kit. I'll probably reuse the springs I've got (not lowering or anything, just looking to restore factory ride quality). Car only has to last me another 5 years so I'd like this to be the last susp. job I do on it... hence me looking for reasonably priced, quality parts.
To complete the parts transfer while replacing worn parts, I think I need a boot and mount, but the mount shown at rockauto (part SM5400)doesn't look like the one I'd need (has a couple of big washers, some big rubber donuts and a metal sleeve; the Raybestos one below it in the catalog looks just the same), whereas my mount has a pocket for the spring plus a mounting flange with a couple of studs attached.
So I ask you good folks, what else, beyond the basic strut, do I need to complete the rebuild of the strut units prior to installation?

Look there. It might be cheaper to buy it off eBay

Be careful, if you have an automatic tranny then apparently you need these assembly with a different part number.

Does anyone know if you can use a manual tranny shock in a auto tranny lower control arm?

shocks and struts are the same no matter what trans you run, just different with 01-02 use 14mm bolts and 03-05 use 16mm. the top shock mount, bearings and springs will be reused with the new strut and shocks when you or the shop rebuild them
