I would say 2.5" but you might have to shave/roll fenders to have the rear camber within spec.
I had 215-40-18s(which are slightly bigger than 215-45-17) with a 2.25-2.5" drop and it was no gap.

1" really doesnt look that good; when I get my 215/45R17's, im going to be sitting somewhere between 1.5 and 2...getting Hayame coilovers, so dont need to worry about it. Not to go n a tangent, but you also have to think about speed bumps...our cars only have 5 inches of clearance to begin with.

Rep Power: 332 I'm riding around on Neuspeed race springs and I'll have to roll my fenders to correct the camber. I'm tucking approx. 1/2 inch of tire in the rear but still have plenty of room in the front. Konis would help with that dramatically, but gotta get the tax return for that.

That's a huge drop especially if you don't have aftermarket shocks.

As far as it being a huge drop without aftermarket shocks, I'm not worried about it. So what if my shocks blow, I'm not planning on having them long anyways. They don't bounce much at all and ride almost as smooth as stock springs did, just lower. I was on sleeved coilovers so the race springs, while lower, ride many times better. I've blown 1 rear strut already but it's really not that big of a deal, it just makes a little noise, no sag at all.
