Just put rims on
My b/f just put rims on my car and when the car gets 50 mph and higher my steering wheel shakes, do I need to get the wheels balanced and aligned? Or could it be something else?

Yeah and hopefully he knew what he was doing and torqued them down and in the right order. Rims should have already been balanced when they were mounted you just need an alignment.
Here's something I learned the hard way. It might not be the cause of your imbalance...but figured I would share anyway. My car had a bad shake in the front tires. It was really really bad on cold days. Turns out there was water in my tire. I usually fill my tires up at the gas station near my house. It seems that condensation builds up inside the line and it gets pushed into the tires when filling them. I now spray air out of the tube before putting it in my car. You'd be amazed at what comes out of the nozzle with the first spray. Ohhh the reason the tires were really bad on cold days? The freaking water froze!!! Just a little heads up.

No you don't need an alignment every time you get tires, you can have them check the alignment to see if possibly it has changed at all, but it should not need one if your tires wore even across the entire tread. After altering any suspension component (springs, shocks etc...) then you will want to get one to be sure everything is even on all four corners and a maximum tire to road contact patch is met for saftey and for your tires.
Alignment will not cause a shake. It is one of many things, most have been covered. It could be something in the tire. They could need hub centric (centering) rings. They might not be torqued properly (should be done after the first 25-50 miles of putting on new wheels). Or what it probably is, the balance is off. Take it to a tire shop, tell them the problem and I would be that they need to be rebalanced. As for alignments, if you are just replacing existing tires (stock) then if they wore properly the alignment does not need to be checked. If you are installing after market wheels/tires (different size from stock) you should have the alignment checked due to the wheel sitting different on the vehicle (offset). Hope this information helps.
