Cool Upgrading to 17x8 Wheels

Hi there,
I have a 2005 civic GLi Sedan and I finally finished fixing up the things that were wrong with it and I'm now looking to start upgrading things slowly, working towards a daily driver that I can also have a good time on the track. I plan on attempting a K20/24 swap in the future but due to Provisional license restrictions that's at least a few years away, so I thought I'd start with wheels, suspension, brakes etc. as on public roads you can definitely get in some trouble if you try hard enough, even with just 88kW. So, the wheels I think I've decided on are the Rota Grid 17s in Bronze and I would like to know what size tire would be best for a trackable car and what brand of tire you guys would recommend, preferably something that also works well in the wet. I also would like to know if I would need to convert from 4 Lug to 5 Lug as I really couldn't find a consensus on if that was really worth it. I would like to avoid if possible cause if I did have to, I would need to purchase wheels, tires and brakes at the same time which I can't really afford right now, however if its necessary for a reliable track car I'd do it, ( I think I'd like the car to sit around 300kW to the wheels, but probably less! ), so any help would be really appreciated!

I used Michelin Pilot Sport AS3+ on mine. They were 205/45R17. 205/50R17 is also popular.

215/45-17 is what I rocked on my 2002 civic. Keeps the error down to like.. 0.6%

I ran them on 17x7 et42's but a 215 treadwidth is just shy of 8.5" wide. Minimal rubbing with ~2" drop. Inner shoulder of the tires rubbed the fenderwell lining at full wheel stop -- not enough to burn through the thickness of the fenderwell lining. It only rubbed off like.. maybe 1mm

I was probably thinking a bit larger than that, maybe 215s or 225s?, Its really strange here in Aus as lots of the tires people suggest aren't sold in the size I need??? like those AS3+ aren't even sold for 17 inch wheels here??????

Yeah fair enough and I'd probably go for a similar drop so that's super helpful

Re: Upgrading to 17x8 Wheels

The drop I had was approximate. I had coilovers (Tein Super Street with pillow ball upper mounts) and they were adjusted to about 1"/25.4mm from lowest adjustment up front (max drop was about 3.5"/89mm), and rears to match. Fenders were about even with the top of the tire, and enough negative camber to allow the tires to tuck inside the fenderwell during suspension compression. I measured it once, there was about ¼"/6mm clearance between the tire's sidewall and the lip of the rear fender, and I didn't have rolled fenders

edited to include metric system bc Aus

I found a set of Advan Neova AD08R 235/40R17 90W | 235/40R17 Tyres for sale (bobjane.com.au), is 235 too wide? on the tire calculator my speed error is -0.84% which is the best I've found so far

225 is already having interference with rear suspension. don't go above 215

The AS3+ are pretty old now (I bought them 6 years ago). They're on the AS4 now.

Re: Upgrading to 17x8 Wheels

Hi,

Some questions about your setup.

I'm looking for a flush type fitment, so i'm considering running something similar, 17x8.5 wheels with a +35mm offset + 215/45/17 all around. I noticed you mentioned that you had a 2 inch drop and there was some rub.

If I were to go with a 1.5 or 1 inch drop (assuming a 1 to 1.5 degree negative camber front wheels) will this alleviate the rubbing issue?

Thanks for any help you can give!
