Newb question on different tire sizes
Newb question on different tire sizes
ok so right now i have some 205/55r16 on my car. i bought those tires with rims already on them. my question now is, will any 16 inch tire fit my rim? eg 215/55 or 205/50, etc etc? what diff would that make?
Re: Newb question on different tire sizes
Any 16 inch tire will fit on the rim. For 215/55/16, the first number is 215mm(width of tire) and second number, 55, is the aspect ratio or sidewall height. The 55 denoting that it's 55% of 215 mm.
Re: Newb question on different tire sizes
There wouldn't be a problem fitting on the rim. The only problem I can see is how low the car is because there might be an issue with rubbing the fender. The wider you go the better traction you get due to the increased surface contact area, but in turn, it also increases your chances of hydroplaning in wet weather.
Just remember, a good rule of thumb is the wider you go in width, you want to compensate by going down on the sidewall by 5%. This is called plus sizing zero. For example, your current size is 205/55/16 and you want to go wider. You would get a 215/50/16. Also keep in mind that some tire sizes aren't all that common, so expect to pay a little more. I would recommend staying with your current tire size. It's a good size for a 16 inch rim on a honda civic.
