Brake issues?
Brake issues?
I have been making a few commutes to college every now and then and up until recently, everything about my 2001 was fine. Now however when I begin to brake I hear a strange sound coming from my rotors/caliper area. I have 66k miles on the car and I believe it is on its 2nd pair of brakes. Does this sound right? Any ideas what the sound can be? If I do have warped rotors, how much would those and new pads cost?
Any help is appreciated!

Get of the tire and check the brakes pads!
The noise (high tone) sometimes can be from rain/show but worth to check it. If not you can end up sraching the disk and if you don't correct the damage your breaks pads will worn very quick!
The brake disk must be smoot!!
Other then that, the life of the break pads are in function of the person driving mood.
I heard break pads lasting 120.000 mi. other 10.000 mi!
First to go is to check the discks smootnes!!!
The brek pads are cheap (under $40) and you can replace them in about 1/2 hour or so.
Low tone noise, poping etc ca be sign of the drive shaft.
But I think you hav only brake isue.

Thanks man. It is like a scratching sound and it only occurs sometimes. Looks like I definitley will be getting brake pads and I might as well drain my brake system. Is draining a difficult job?
Nope. You need to change the fluid every 3 years.
You need a friend to help pressing the break. You need to to lose the release "valves" to get read of the old break fluid and fill up with new one and get out the air bubles from the system.
Not a difficult job, if you have mechanical dexterity and some knowledge. I dont know if is a DYI for this but you can check out. Or google around.
Don't forget to check youd break disk smootness!!! This is one key to save money and have better break.
Good luck.

First question is what kind of pads are they?
Some pads will grind and grumble at you.
Flushing the lines will do nothing to fix a noise, although it is a wise idea to do so if it hasn't been done in a long time.
The rotors should be checked for scoring, hot spots, uneven pad material transfer or excessive runout.

As far as I know, the pervious owner had honda rotors, calipers, and pads. The reason I am so worried about this is because being a college student, I don't exactly have the income to completely upgrade my braking system. For you guys that have aftermarket brake systems, what kind do you have, where can I find them, and how much can I find them for?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Go buy autozone rotors ($20 each) and some carbon ceramic based pads (Hawk HPS, HP+, Axxis Ultimates, etc....)
but before you start swapping **** around, have it looked at. It may just be something caught in between the pad and the rotor face making noise.

I had my rotors checked today and he said I was pretty close to bare metal. The guy stated that quality rotors should cost around 35 and I can buy some nice brake pads for around 40. I think I will be doing this next weekend. For those that have done a complete brake overhaul, how long did it take you and are there any special tools or materials that I need?

could be air in the lines. i know thats what my problem is. when i did my pads i accidently let the resevior cap off and went and did my break in. cause im an idiot
I personally dont think it is air in the lines. I will check tomorrow. The guy said my rotors were almost to the suggested service level so maybe it could be them. How long does it take to bleed to braking system?
I have decided to get new rotors, calipers, and pads. I have around 200 dollars to spend on all of these. What tools will I need? Also what brake systems are you all using nowdays?
Once again thanks again for all input!

Calipers are 152 EACH from Honda (you get 40 back per caliper for returning the core, so 112). I suppose you could buy them from Autozone or something (they're rebuilds of replica calipers)... but I wouldn't trust anything but the Honda ones (the ones you get from Honda are rebuilds of the OE Nissin ones).
So you blew your 200 on calipers alone
Rotors from autozone are $40 total
Pads like Axxis Ultimates are about 50.
So you're at give or take 300.
Whats wrong with the calipers?

but all it does is replace the rotor. With a heavy enormous one and the same dinky brake pad which is still left to overheat, now worse from the extra torque being applied on it, not to mention its like $400 for a friggin set of rotors that you're going to destroy into oblivion anyways.
