The more plus offset means theyre not as wide. So a 30mm offset will make the wheels stick out further then a 40mm offset.

I heard about this offset... what the hell is it for and why do we need it? I lowered my car about 2.5 inches and want 17's. Will I need this?

Choosing a good offset is important whe lowering or getting larger wheels. For example, say if you lowered your car 2" and you have 17" wheels that have a +30mm offset. The +30mm is going to make the wheel stick out further. Now when you go to choose tires, you'll have to compensate for the wider wheel and get a skinnier tire or you'll rub when the tire tucks into the fender. A good rule of thumb for our cars is to look for a wheel that has 37mm or more postive offset.

offset is dependent on width..
your fine w/ a +40 17x7 or 17x7.5 dont worry
lower=stick out further
higher= stick in further
remember the diff between +43 and +40 is 3mm so worst case scenario camber her in
on my car Es1 sedan i can do as much as +26 on a 7.5 in my rear but i have alot of fender mods.

And I wouldn't do it... Ms. Tire will get very friendly with Mr. Fender Lip.
most 17's are made in a range from 38-44 for the most part. i havent seen many problems in getting them to work if you get an offset that will stick out a little further then you can always roll the fenders

thanx for all the replys.... actually i'm getting GL57c 17.5 +40 offset, so i guess tire size also makes a difference too. I was worrying about +40 sticking out hitting the out side fender when i drop it more cuz i want the front to be close to tucking
