When Did You Change Your Brakepads?

i'm at 54,000km and still using the same pads from day one. i just want to know what is the average before needing replacement on these pads. i'm driving a 02 civic si/ex. my breaks still work fine, but it does make a sound once when i break after breaking from the opposite directions. just want to know if its almost time to change. thanks.

Okay. I just replaced my pads with EBC GreenStuffs this weekend. I had ~25,500 miles on my car. The pad on the driver side was fine, but the one on the passenger side was really low. So low that it was hitting the squeal tab. If you take a look at your pads, you'll see on the inside pad that it has a little metal piece sticking out. This is the squeal tab. What happens is that when the pad is gone that little thing starts rubbing on the back side of your rotor, making a noise. That squealing is to let you know it's time to replace your pads. As far as when to replace your pads, it's all up to you and how you drive your car. Most cars that are daily drivers that don't see a lot of highway miles because they're driven in the city will probably be replacing their pads between 25,000 and 30,000 mi. Also, you may want to resurface your rotors at that time. You can only get them resurfaced twice, *maybe* 3 times if your lucky. Honda specs say not to take the rotors any lower than 19mm and they come at 21mm. If you have any more questions, just go ahead and ask.

I just changed mine at 26k to upgrade my breaks to Brembo. They were really, really thick still. I couldn't believe how little the breaks had worn. In my RX-7 they were completely worn by 20k miles. I saved them just in case.

No one really answered his question. Just look at your front brakes. If you can't see them through your wheel then take the front wheels off after jacking up the car. Look at the inner part of the caliper facing the disc. You should see the brown pad against the disc. (It's the only thing that touches the disc.) I believe a new pad usually has about 1/2 an inch of pad. You should be ready to expect to replace them when they look too thin.

If your brakes squeal then you're running low on pads or have run out. Replace them immediately if it comes to that. The squealing is a sign that the metal part of the pad is scraping the surface of your disc which isn't good at all.. If it scrapes too much you'll ruin the disc and will need to either get it resurfaced or replaced depending on the damage done.

And if you haven't noticed, everyone's pads wears differently. If you ride your brakes or do a lot of hard braking they may be done by 25k miles. If you do a lot of freeway driving you probably have more pad than someone who drives mostly in the city or some who brakes hard/often at high speeds (think over 100MPH).

I changed mine at 80,000km or 50,0000miles. Put in some performance pads and brembo slots. Honda mentioned to me that if you have heavier and bigger rims, it's a possibility that they'll wear out quicker.

If you look at picture #1 all the pads have a groove in the middle.

When that groove is gone , change your pads !
